The Malopolskie Region
The 20th meridian East longitude and the 50th parallel North latitude intersect in the suburbs of Kraków. Cartographers say this is the geographical centre of Europe!
Małopolska covers 15,190 sq. km in the southern part of Poland bordering the Slovak Republic. The region is very conveniently situated with regard to communications. In the past important trade routes crossed here. Nowadays it is crossed by the important trans-European transport corridor TINA III, one of the most important railway lines in Europe and a line connecting western Europe with south-eastern Europe. The region's border crossings (of which the most significant lies at Chyżne) make it easy to get to Slovakia and further on to the Balkan countries.
Krakow Area
Artists and scholars have been visiting Krakow for centuries, sculpturing the city into what it is today. The renaissance Royal Castle at Wawel, the gothic St. Mary’s Basilica, the trade pavilions of the Cloth Hall and the former separate Jewish city of Kazimierz are to name but a few of the historic places that make a visit to Krakow such a memorable event. As a result of this incredible assembly of cultural wealth, Krakow was registered as one of the 12 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the historic aspects of the city which attract visitors but they stay for the way in which this historic city intertwines with the present era. There are modern exhibitions, vibrant cafes, happening pubs and an array of fine restaurants to keep you entertained from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Getting There
Flights: Fly from Dublin with Ryanair / Aer Lingus Fly from Shannon with Ryanair Fly from Belfast with EasyJet BUS Cheap, cheerful and by no means a bad option, MKS, provides a frequent bus service from the airport to the city centre. The bus stop is just to the right on exiting the airport and tickets are available either from the ticket machine (2.50 PLN) next to the information point in the passenger terminal or on board (3 PLN). Be aware that if you have any baggage larger than a rucksack, you’ll be expected to purchase an additional ticket for this. Stamp tickets immediately after boarding to avoid fines. The 192 service runs approximately every 20 minutes from 4:45am to just after 11pm. Alight at the main station Dworec Glowny where you’ll find maps, info points, public transport connections and you’ll be a mere 5 minutes walk from the main square. An alternative 208 service runs slightly less frequently though this is for those staying near to the Nowy Kleparz district. For both services, its worth remembering that these services are not exclusive airport services and are normally pretty packed by about the half way point of the journey. Journey time 25-35 minutes. Check out the MPKwebsite for exact times and routes. TAXI If the thought of ‘bussing it’ with luggage after your flight doesn’t appeal, taxis will be on hand immediately upon leaving departures. A trip to the centre shouldn’t cost more than 60-70 PLN (£12-15, €20, $25) Any more and they’ve seen you coming... TRAIN Bit of a locomotive enthusiast? A recently opened service connecting the main rail station, Dworec Glowny with the airport runs approximately every half hour from 4am until midnight. Tickets are available on board or from a machine in the main terminal building near the information desk, and cost 3.80 PLN (70p, €1). The platform is approximately 200 metres from the passenger terminal though a free shuttle bus is on hand for the weary. Journey time is approx 15mins. Rent a car Can’t miss these guys. All your international friends plus their Polish counterparts are waiting by arrivals in the main terminal.
