The Kyrenia District Region

Kyrenia with its Byzantine harbour & Castle, is beautiful to vist daytime or evening. The little horseshoe harbour is surrounded by cafes & bars housed in the old carob Houses. Daily boat trips can be taken around the coast from here. Bellapais Abbey built around 1200 is a beautiful old monastery, there are sometimes Classical Concerts held there & the views from the village there are amazing. St Hilarion Castle is also worth a visit. It is named after a saint who escaped from Jerusalem in the 10th century, there are lots of steps up to it, but it is worth it for the view. The climate of Cyprus is lovely. March. April, May, June, Sept, October & even November are around 20-25c & there is usually a breeze. July & August are for the sunworhippers when the temperature reaches 30-35c, but it is always cooler on the beaches.

Ozonkoy Area

The villa is about a 10 minute walk to the village of Ozankoy where there are several excellent restaurants. The closest bar/restaurant to the villa is Rafters, just at the bottom of the street and one of the very best in North Cyprus Indian, Italian & European menu, reasonably priced & even take aways! We are a 5 minute drive to Kyrenia, with it's many shops, bars & restaurants. There are 3 excellant supermarkets within a 3 minute drive
all have very good deli & butchery counters if you prefer to BBQ. The local beach is Karakum 3 mins drive, but our favourite is Lara Beach, a liitle cove with safe shallow water, sunbeds & umbrellas for hire & a little cafe.It is 10 mins drive. A 15-20 drive takes you to Turtle Beach which is a conservation area for hatching Turtles. In June & July visitors are encouraged to come in the evenings to watch the hatchings, an unforgettale experience. It is also a lovely place to spend the day, but it has no sunbeds for hire, just miles of sand & few people.
If hiring a car it is worthwhile to visit Famagusta, have a drink at the Palm Beach Hotel there & have a look at the old city of Varosha, The no mans land since 1974 when the division of the Island took place. It is still patrolled by the UN & no-one is allowed to enter but it can be viewed through the wire, fascinating. The Salamis Ruins which are an ancient Roman town are close to Famagusta, tourists can visit them for a few Lira. The Karpas which is known as the panhandle is a must see as well.If you drive to the very tip you can visit St Andreas monastery which is still a Greek Church. The area has lovely unspoilt beaches & wild donkeys. you can drive for miles & not see another car.Take a picnic if you go there as there are few cafes.
There are 2 Golf courses about an hours drive away. There is a brown course at Guzelyurt on the West of the Island & a brand new one at Esentepe in the East. Both accept visitors.
