The Tuscany Region

Tuscany - everyone finds something different to entice them to this beautiful part of Italy. The splendid cities of Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca not forgetting the equally magnificent walled towns of Volterra, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano famous for its towers.

Its food - when you bite into Tuscan bread drenched in olive oil the taste captures everything about this regions cooking. Sample prosciutto crudo & cotto (raw & cooked ham) with its intense flavour, Zuppa, a typical Tuscan soup made with beans and dried bread and served thick, no other meal is needed after this, cinghiale, wild boar minced with fresh pasta or cut into thin slices and eaten on its own.

Its wines - where does one begin - Tuscany is a wine lovers paradise with many wine trails to follow. Famous for its Chianti, Montepulciano, Vernaccia from San Gimignano, Morellino di Scansano, Brunello and dont forget the Grappa, Limoncello and Vin Santo.

What else - landscapes and countryside where you can discover new smells, brilliant colours that are constantly changing, sights never to be forgotten, this is Tuscany.

Places to visit - there will never be enough time to see all you must in one visit - so plan a time to come back. Apart from the cities and towns already mentioned there are so many that should be visited - Vinci, birthplace to Leonardo, Radda, Greve & Gaiole in Chianti all unspoilt medieval towns, the mountain area around Lucca with its breathtaking scenery and the coastline taking in Viareggio, Torre del Lago home to Puccini, Camaiore, Tirrenia and Cecina.

Where does it end - never.

You can walk for as long as you would like - the length and breadth of Tuscany staying at farmhouses and B & B's along the way or amble around the area where you are staying. You can cycle along its many wine routes, horse ride, play golf, take balloon rides or hanglide and then you can go home to your accommodation - because thats what Tuscany will become.

When you watch the sun rise and set in Tuscany the cypress trees go black against a background of orange and red. A moment of sheer luxury, to see, to experience and never to forget. A sense of peace and well-being flows through the land, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

It makes you smile and brings a tear to your eye for its beauty. Landscapes you could never envisage - a feeling of living in times gone by.

When you hear the silence it is deafening, but it is a peace and quiet of wonder and amazement that comes from the natural earth.

Watch the fireflies dance, listen to the animal world talking to one another, birds calling, a soft breeze through the trees.

San Gimignano Area

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill-top town in Tuscany, Italy, about a 35 minute drive north-west of Siena and about the same distance southwest of Florence. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers. Because of its position atop a hill the skyline can be seen for several miles outside the town.

San Gimignano. The town is also known for the white wine grown in the area, Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

In Italian medieval walled towns, rich families competed in the erection of high towers, that served as lodgings, fortresses and prestige symbols. While in other cities like Bologna or Florence, most or all of the towers have been brought down due to wars, catastrophes or urban renewal, San Gimignano managed to conserve 13 towers of varying height which are its international symbol.
