The Midi-Pyrenees Region

Midi-Pyrénées (Occitan: Miègjorn-Pirenèus; Gascon: Mieidia-Pirenèus) is the largest region of metropolitan France, larger than the Netherlands or Denmark.

Midi-Pyrénées has no historical or geographical unity. It is one of the regions of France created artificially in the late 20th century to serve as an hinterland and zone of influence for its capital, Toulouse, one of a handful so-called "balancing metropolises" (métropoles d'équilibre)¹. Another example of this is the region of Rhône-Alpes which was created as the region for Lyon.

The name chosen for the new region was decided by the French central government without reference to the historical provinces (too many of them inside the region) and based purely on geography: Midi (i.e. "southern regions", in a Parisian perspective) - Pyrénées (Pyrenees mountains that are the southern limit of the region). The French adjective and name of the inhabitants of the region is: Midi-Pyrénéen.

 

Masseube Area

Masseube, which is about 10 minutes away by car has virtually everything you will need during your holiday, supermarket, banks, hairdresser, florist and news agent. The very ancient county town, Auch is 30 minutes away. It has a medieval centre and a famous cathedral. This is D'Artangnan's hometown, you might like to pay your respects. He can be found half way up the long stone steps leading to the Armagnac Tower. There is a selection of restaurants within ten minutes drive, inexpensive and rural to the opposite end of the scale. Both Masseube and Boulogne sur Gesse have municipal swimming pools with slides. The Gers is bird country, the variety and quantity is quite staggering. There are numerous walks where you can observe nature. The lake beside our house is a fishing lake, a licence can be purchased for very little, to cover the lake and a few local rivers.

Coast/Beach
We live almost half way between the Med and the Atlantic, so a trip to the coast is a full days outing, at least a three hour drive.

Golf
There is a 9 hole course within five minutes of the house, about ten years old, so well established. However very hilly, so you need to be in your health. An 18 hole course is a half hours drive away in Lombez, very well kept with restaurant attached. An hour south has an 18 hole course in Lannemezan, lush and heavily wooded. An hour north is the Auch 18 hole course, well kept with club house facilities.

Skiing
The ski slopes will be shut during the summer months, however the lifts still operate in some resorts allowing you to walk high in the mountains. The nearest is about an hour away.

Special interest holidays
There are various white-water rafting centres, depending on how adventurous the kids are. There is an outdoor pursuits centre near Auch, (half hour) which includes horse riding, climbing in harness, slides etc. Lac Gimone is a supervised swimming lake ten minutes away where one can hire sailing dinghies also a motorised paragliding school for the very brave.

 

Getting There

Toulouse airport, Blagnac, is one hour away. Pau is 1.5 hours away, Carcassonne and Biarritz are 2.5 hours away. The drive from the northern ports is a long one and should be broken half way down if possible, you can expect a ten to twelve hour trip We recommend fly/drive for the best holiday experience.

Distances: Driving time to local villages, St. Blancard 5 mins, Boulogne sur Gesse 10 mins, Masseube 10 mins, Auch (county town) 30 mins, Mirande (country and western festival) 30 mins, Marciac (jazz festival) 40 mins, Toulouse 60 mins. Spain is about an hours drive south, well worth the trip!

The gardens are approximately an acre of lawns with a badminton court(equipment included) A barbecue can be set up in various situations. Garden furniture includes recliners, table, chairs and parasols. The largest pond in the area is on the property, full of carp, perch and one large pike, you are welcome to try your luck. The large ground floor games room has a table tennis table and four bikes. The pool is 12 x 5m surrounded by a ceder deck and is shared with the owners, who live in a separate building beside the entrance.

Prices are for the property per week in euros.
Please contact owners if you are interested in long term lets.
Mid season June and September. High season July and August.

Changeover day
Preferred changeover day is Saturday, minimum stay one week. We are flexible about change over days for longer periods. If you arrive on a Saturday we would ask you to vacate the house by 10am on the day of departure to allow us to clean.

Notes on accommodation
This property is not suitable for toddlers and small children. Accommodation is on the first and second floor with a veranda overlooking the pool on the first floor.

Kitchen: Entrance is into large living/kitchen area. The kitchen is fully equipped with, fridge/freezer, gas hob, electric oven/grill, micro and dishwasher.

Utility Room: Laundry facilities are next door, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Living Rooms: Combined living/kitchen area. There is a wood burning stove (unlikely to be needed) TV, video, CD player and music system. Extensive English language CD, Video and book library available.

Other: The mezzanine on the second floor is very large and used as a fourth bedroom. There is a large games room on the ground floor.

Cleaning/towels/linen/maid service: Towels, linen and glass cloths are included and are changed every week. The property will be clean when you arrive, we expect you to leave it the same way. A light meal will await your arrival to ease you into a self catering holiday.
