Number 11 is situated just around the corner from the square in the centre of the village (seen above). Montreal-du-Gers was the first bastide village to be built and was founded in 1255.
The house is stone built, 1777, and is a typical example of a Gascon village house. The front door leads from the street into the living room which comprises a dining and sitting area with wood-burning stove. Original exposed beams and stone are a feature of this area. This leads through to a galley style kitchen, bathroom and wc. From there French doors open onto the south-facing terrace with magnificent views of the rolling countryside typical of the Gers. On a clear day it is possible to see the Pyrenees, they are more visible in Winter, but do make an occasional appearance on a summer’s day.

The Midi-Pyrenees - Gers Region
Montreal is an ideal location from which to explore this diverse and interesting area of SW France, the history of which includes the Crusades, Knights Templar and the Hundred Years War. 30km north is the town of Nerac a busy market town where the Chateau of Henri IV can be visited and where the Buzet wine festival is held every August.
Just two km from Montreal-du-Gers is the Roman archaeological site of Seviac which is one of the best examples of a Roman villa surviving outside of Italy, stunning mosaic can be seen along with the bath house and several other areas covering approximately 4 acres.
Six km from the village on the road to Condom you will find the fortified village of Larresingle, ‘Little Carcasonne’. Open air theatre is performed by a troupe of travelling players there every summer.
There is so much to discover about Gascony that it’s impossible to include everything here. Take a trip, escape the rat race and immerse yourself in traditional French rural life. Let Gascon joie de vivre remind you what life is really all about.
Midi-Pyrénées (Occitan: Miègjorn-Pirenèus; Gascon: Mieidia-Pirenèus) is the largest region of metropolitan France, larger than the Netherlands or Denmark.
Midi-Pyrénées has no historical or geographical unity. It is one of the regions of France created artificially in the late 20th century to serve as an hinterland and zone of influence for its capital, Toulouse, one of a handful so-called "balancing metropolises" (métropoles d'équilibre)¹. Another example of this is the region of Rhône-Alpes which was created as the region for Lyon.
The name chosen for the new region was decided by the French central government without reference to the historical provinces (too many of them inside the region) and based purely on geography: Midi (i.e. "southern regions", in a Parisian perspective) - Pyrénées (Pyrenees mountains that are the southern limit of the region). The French adjective and name of the inhabitants of the region is: Midi-Pyrénéen
Montreal-du-Gers Area
Montréal-du-Gers is a quiet, charming rural village. The square is typical of a bastide, with arcades and is overlooked by a 13th Century Church. There is a well-stocked grocery store, a butcher, baker, post-office, pharmacy and tourist office.
On Friday morning the square comes alive with the local market where fruit, fish, vegetables and regional produce can be purchased. The market is always entertaining whether you buy or just take coffee at ‘Café Daubin’ and people-watch. There are also the essentials of two doctors’ surgeries and a dentist in and around the square.
Two restaurants offer an excellent choice of cuisine. ‘Chez Simone’ specialises in traditional French food and is renowned in the area, very popular with local families for Sunday lunch and special occasions. ‘Lescales’ offers a combination of Gascon cuisine, local wines, pizza and pasta dishes. Very good food, reasonably priced. Sample the local specialities of foie gras, armagnac, floc and wine straight from the producers at local farms and wineries.
During July and August the Base de Loisirs is open. This is a swimming lake with a sandy beach, snack-bar and games area. There is a lifeguard on duty from 10am – 7pm.
Also during July and August, the village celebrates it’s medieval history by holding two evenings of music, banqueting and entertainment. Medieval fancy-dress is available on loan to everyone who wishes to take part. These are wonderful family oriented events where there really is fun to be had for everyone.
The second weekend in August is given over to the Village en Fétè, a four day festival of late night music and carnival fun for all the family, the highlight of which is Courses Landaise, the regional sport of bull fighting where rival village teams test their courage and agility against the charging bull but at no risk or harm to the animals. A very entertaining spectacle which is an ancient tradition in the area.
Vic Fezansac, a neighbouring town, holds an international Latin-American Dance Festival during July/August and there are night markets every second Wednesday during July and August. The Gers has an abundance of festivals, concerts, theatre and exhibitions during the summer months. You will find all the information you need in the tourist office in Montreal-du-Gers.
