The Tuscany Region

Alta Maremma occupies a vast portion of the central-southern area of Tuscany. It extends over part of the Province of Grosseto, where the Metalliferous Hills incline gently towards and almost touch the Tyrrhenian coast of the Gulf of Follonica. This striking angle of the Maremma has the configuration of one gentle slope after another – some covered with uninterrupted woodland and others cultivated with olive groves and vineyards. Nowadays, this area is subdivided into the various boroughs of Massa Marittima, Monterotondo Marittima, Montieri and Roccastrada and boasts of an ancient history with its Etruscan remains, medieval castles protected on the hills, monuments of outstanding beauty, rocks and minerals mined throughout the centuries. Thanks to a proud sense of identity and belonging, the people of each inhabited area of Maremma, have known how to preserve their distinctive ancient traditions, the slow rhythm of life, the characteristic flavours of their cooking and the fragrance of their local wine.

Maremma Area

Massa Marittima is situated in a panoramic position at 400 metres above sea level in the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) which ring the Gulf of Follonica. The main square, which maintains its charm in all seasons with its sober and stately buildings in tufa, expresses the most remarkable epoch of its history, when at the height of its splendour in the 12th century it minted its own coin. The city offers a variety of well organised museums. Absolutely not to be missed, are the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Sacred Art ( Museo di Arte Sacra) where "the Majesty", a splendid painting by Ambrogio Lorenzetti can be seen. The Museum of the Mining Industry (Museo della Miniera) with its 700 metre gallery is also unique. Visitors are given an authentic insight into mining life by the reproduction of the working methods and the equipment used by the miners as well as exhibits of local rock and minerals. Last but not least, is the Torre del Candeliere. On a clear day from the top of this tower, it is possible to see beyond the Gulf of Follonica as far as the isle of Elba. The streets of the city bustle with life during the various events held throughout the year. One of the most important and oldest traditional events is the Balestro del Girifalco, a crossbow target shooting competition between skilled members of the three divisions of the city, when the competitors contend the "palio". All this takes place within the perimeter of the main square and the event is highlighted by banner throwing and the sound of trumpets and drums
