Casa Fluvià is an attractive 18th century stone farmhouse situated in an Alt Ampurdan village near the Costa Brava. The newly remodeled house accommodates up to 8 guests in stylish comfort in its ample living spaces and 4 large bedrooms. Downstairs, dramatic vaulted ceilings resting on stone walls, columns and arches exhibit the charm and authenticity of the original construction, while the decorative floor tiles and artisan woodwork of the main floor are artifacts of a 1930’s reform in the turn-of-the-century styling still popular in Catalunya at that time. One bedroom, formerly used for drying corn, has escaped this reform, retaining its high, slanted wood-beamed ceiling and the horizontal beams from which the cornstalks once hung to dry, while the downstairs bedroom features a ceramic-tiled vaulted ceiling. From the rooftop sun room and terrace guests enjoy sunshine, fresh breezes and tranquil views of the surrounding countryside as far as the snow-capped Pyrenees.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia Region

Torroella de Fluvià is conveniently near some the most attractive and least crowded beaches of the Costa Brava. Just down the road, the vast stretch of beach at Sant Pere Pescador runs all the way to historic Sant Martí de Empuries, an island village in Roman times, with its own charming beach featuring a Greek breakwater and five small coves. From here, a maritime walkway with views of the Roman ruins of Empúries runs as far as the fishing town of L’Escala with its own seafront promenade, beaches and tempting sea food restaurants. Continue on past the tourist resort south of L’Escala and you find yourself far from the madding crowd in the midst of the secluded natural preserve of the Gran Muntaya with secret coves, wild boar and practically limitless trails for hiking, cycling and even automobile access for those equipped with a suitable map.

Lovers of nature should not fail to visit the nearby Aiguamolls nature preserve where migrant birds routinely stop on their way to and from Africa. Resident species include storks as well as egrets, hoopoes, a huge variety of more common meadow birds and waterfowl, and more surprisingly, flamingos. The banks of the Fluvià river some 200 meters from Casa Fluvià fall under the protection of this nature preserve, safeguarding the presence of many bird species.

Cap de Creus is another nearby protected coastal area, marking the easternmost point of continental Spain, where the Pyrenees run down to the sea, accessible by way of the popular costal village Cadaqués and the Salvador Dalí residence at Port Lligat. The Dalí museum in Figueres is about 15 minutes from Torroella, while Girona airport is 25 minutes away. El Bulli, currently the world’s most famous restaurant is nearby, but please note, usually requires booking several months in advance.

Visitors find plenty to do in any season in this rural area dotted with medieval villages: there are weekly markets and local festivals to visit, Roman and prehistoric ruins, churches and monasteries to see, good country cooking, great walks, a bird sanctuary, and sporting activities of all kinds. If the mood should strike you to sample the pleasures of town and city you can be in Figueres or Girona in 15 or 20 minutes, or take a train to Barcelona for the day. The Roussillon region of France, some 25 minutes away, has its own pleasures to offer and is more than worth a visit by those with a bit time to spend.

Sant Pere Pescador Area

Sant Pere village is a bustling place busy with the tasks of fruit growing and picking and providing services for visitors to the nearby beaches (the town itself is located on the estuary of the Fluvià a couple of km from the beach).

More mundane tourist pleasures can be enjoyed in Roses or Ampuria Brava, and children particularly appreciate the public swimming pool and the Family Fun Centre just minutes away from casa Fluvià in Vilacolum, where cycle rental is also available. This can be reached by walking through the fields along the old highway, now only rarely used by traffic.

Getting There

25 minutes from Girona airport (Ryanair hub) and easily accessible from Barcelona and Perpignan airports. Car hire available at all airports.
