The Donegal Region
County Donegal (Irish: Contae Dhún na nGall) is a county in the northwest of Ireland. It is one of three counties in the province of Ulster that does not form part of Northern Ireland. The name "Donegal" comes from the Irish, meaning "the fort of the foreigners". The county was named after the former administrative centre of Donegal Town. When first created, it was sometimes referred to as County Tyrconnel (Irish: Tír Chonaill), after the Tyrconnel earldom it succeeded. Calling the whole county Tír Conaill is technically incorrect as the Inishowen peninsula (Irish: Inis Eoghain) was historically distinct from Tír Chonaill.
Uniquely, Donegal only shares a border with one county in the Republic of Ireland, named County Leitrim in north Connacht. The rest of its land border is shared with the United Kingdom (the Northern Irish counties of Londonderry, Tyrone and Fermanagh). This apparent isolation has led to Donegal people and their customs being considered distinct from the rest of the country and has been used to market the county with the slogan Up here it's different.[citation needed] Despite Lifford being the county town (and there also being a Donegal town), the largest town is Letterkenny.
Rossnowlagh Area
Rossnowlagh is a beach located in County Donegal, in the west of Ireland. It is situated about 8km northeast of Ballyshannon and 16km south of Donegal Town. The beach is very popular with surfers, swimmers and sailing and has life guards. It has about 4km of good quality sand beaches.
To the south-west stands the ruined Kilbarron Castle and there are cliffs on the way to Kildoney Point. A modern Franciscan Friary is located here.
Rossnowlagh is one of Ireland's - and Europes's - best surfing beaches. As it faces westwards into the Atlantic Ocean, and the fact that Donegal Bay's funnel shape increases the speed and size of the rollers, Rossnowlagh, especially in winter, has some huge waves. Rossnowlagh has been known to have rollers up to 20ft high. Rossnowlagh has good facilities and excellent water quality.
Rossnowlagh is also home to the Sandhouse Hotel, and the historic Surfers Bar.
The near by Franciscan Friary is worth a visit.
Rossnowlagh is fully lifeguarded in Summer and it also employs beach wardens for the summer months to control the traffic on the beach and motorised craft in the water.
The annual Intercounties surf contest is held in Rossnowlagh every October and is one of the highlights of the surfing calander.
Barry Britton is one of Donegal’s surfing legends. He is also an incredible artist and architect with his showroom and office across the road from the Sandhouse Hotel. It’s definitely worth checking out.
