This lovely house is located in Fort Haven, which is just off the quiet country Main Street in the pretty village of Duncannon. An excellent location, within a very short walk to the beach and village pubs/restaurants.

The house is very luxurious and furnished to a very high standard. It has an unusual layout: the living room is upstairs, with a high vaulted ceiling, giving a lovely airy feel, and a large arched window leading to a balcony. This is the main attraction, as there is a beautiful view from here down over Waterford bay. Fishing boats and ships can be regularly seen en route to Waterford Port or Duncannon Harbour.

The master bedroom leads off the living room, (upstairs), with ensuite shower-room/wc. The dining area and kitchen are downstairs, along with two further bedrooms and the main bathroom. There is a rear enclosed garden, decked, with garden furniture and kids' playhouse. There are a lot of extra comforts, e.g. TV (Satellite), DVD player, 2nd TV (Satellite), Hi-fi (CD/Radio), microwave oven, dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc. (See further details below).

The holiday home can sleep up to six as follows:
Main bedroom (upstairs): Double Bed, sleeps 2; (Ensuite)
Bedroom 2 (downstairs): Single Bed with extra single "guest" bed, sleeps 1 or 2;
Bedroom 3 (downstairs): Bunk Beds, sleeps 2.
(A Travel Cot is also available).

Duncannon village has a lovely family holiday atmosphere. It is a pretty seaside resort that has, somehow, managed to remain fairly un-commercial. Duncannon's main attraction is the huge sandy beach, with views out over Waterford Bay towards Hook Lighthouse. There are two good pub/restaurants in the village (both family friendly), a more formal restaurant ("Sqigl"), two cafés (seasonal opening), a "take-away", pizzeria, post-office, small hotel, and a convenience store, all near the house. For more gourmet tastes, there are also a number of other high quality restaurants within 5km (e.g. Dunbrody Country House Hotel, Aldridge Lodge). Right at the beach, just a couple of minutes from the house, there is a great children's playground, tennis court, and basketball court. There is plenty to see and do in the area, the most popular being: Hook Head Lighthouse, Duncannon Fort, Dunbrody Famine Ship, Whale Watching trips, Kitesurfing, Wexford Heritage Park, JFK Arboretum, amongst others. You can also reach Waterford quite easily via the Passage East ferry, (about 3km away), worth it just for the scenery!

There is plenty to see and do in the area, the most popular being: Wexford Heritage Park, Hook Head Lighthouse (one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world), Duncannon Fort (the location used for the film "The Count of Monte Cristo"), Dunbrody Famine Ship, JFK Arboretum, Dunbrody Abbey and Maze, Tintern Abbey, and much more.

Duncannon Area

Duncannon is a pretty seaside village that has a lovely family holiday atmosphere. Its main attraction is the huge sandy beach, with views over Waterford Bay out towards Hook Head Lighthouse. Very popular in Summer with families; also popular with couples, groups all year round.

The village has a nice intimate feeling that has made it very popular, yet never overly-commercial. Two local pubs ("The Strand Tavern" and "Roches") serve great food and, for more gourmet menus, there is a good selection of restaurants in the area, e.g. "Sqigl", "Dunbrody Country House Hotel", "Aldridge Lodge", etc. There are two cafés (seasonal opening), "Sandy Dock", for barista coffee and tasty home-made cakes and breads and "The Officers' Mess" up at the Fort. There is a small local "Take Away" Restaurant that operates in high season (June to August), which is always popular with holiday-makers and, just opened in 2011, a great Pizza/Fish Take-Away "Off the Hook".

There are numerous festivals and special events held regularly throughout the year in the area, usually drawing plenty of visitors (and these dates usually book first, so get in early)! Here is a taste of what will be on locally this year:

St Patrick's Day
Parade to be held on the beach. A fabulous fun atmosphere for all the family, 2012 will be just the second year for Duncannon to hold its unique parade. With the 6 Nations Rugby match of Ireland v England on 17th March, it'll be hard to beat Duncannon for atmosphere this weekend.

Hook Head Lighthouse
Rated no 1 in the top flashiest lighthouses list by the renowned travel website Lonely Planet, Hook Lighthouse is only a short drive from this holiday home (8mi/12km). It is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, which can also be seen from Duncannon beach. Check out www.lonelyplanet.com/ireland/travel-tips-and-articles/76680 AND www.hookheritage.ie.

Maritime Matters Festival
Usually held at May Bank Holiday weekend, this will have displays and manoeuvres on the water by the Irish Marine Rescue Services. Displays, exhibits and demonstrations by the Irish Water Safety, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, and more. Outdoor stalls selling local crafts, art, jewellery, antiques, surf gear, and lots more. Refreshments available all weekend.

Military Re-enactment Weekend
Held annually, usually at Whit weekend (Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June 2012), this fabulous weekend draws a loyal following year after year and is guaranteed to fascinate all age groups. Authentic vintage and modern military vehicles on display up at the Fort and in use around the village. Genuine enthusiasts and re-enactment groups in military uniform will re-enact a famous battle (usually from WWII) in the sand dunes at the beach and this often attracts National TV coverage.

Duncannon Sandsculpting Festival
Probably the best family fun festival in the area, the "SandFest" is held in Duncannon annually. Well renowned for its fun atmosphere, it will be held from 10th to 12th August 2012. International artists sculpt from sand on Duncannon Beach and lots of activities over three days, including sand-castle competitions, tug-o-war, kiddies' painting wall, and other activities. First night always opens with a great Beach Party and brilliant Fireworks display. Fabulous fun and entertainment - Duncannon manages to retain its intimate atmosphere whilst hosting one of the best festivals for families during holiday time.

Wexford Kitesurfing Festival 2012
Wexford's 3rd annual kitesurfing festival, in association with IKSA, will take place on Duncannon beach on weekend of 24th and 25th August 2012. The festival offers an array of activities for young and old alike. With live outdoor music, BBQ and kids' activities, it guarantees to be a fun packed weekend on the beach.

Duncannon Fort
This 16th Century Fort (location used for filming "The Count of Monte Cristo") is the local historical interest. Interesting and fun to explore, it has the Maritime Museum, a small Craft Shop, Coffee Shop ("The Officers' Mess"), and also CockleShell Art Gallery, well worth visiting. There is also a handy Internet Cafe at the Fort.
