The Languedoc-Roussillon/ Pyrenees-Orientales Region

With an average of 320 days of sunshine per year! This area appeals to a wide range of people, offering year-round opportunities. Summer visitors enjoy the Mediterranean climate and when not taking advantage of the river, mountain and coastal activities, they can enjoy relaxing in one of the many thermal baths in the region. Less than 1 hour from the Mediterranean beaches. for the winter visitors the ski resorts of the Pyrenees are only 45 mins away – it really is the perfect year round destination for a relaxing holiday or as a base for exploring.
A mere 2 km away is Villefranche-de-Conflent, a medieval town with imposing fortifications, caves and the château-fort Liberia, which dominates the valley. It offers a range of restaurants and interesting shops selling an array of local crafts and produce. It is also the starting point of the famous 'little yellow train' A unique narrow gauge mountain railway that departs regularly from Villefranche winds its way up from the valley crossing rivers and gorges heading up into the high Pyrenees. The town of Vinça, 26km away there is a lake and beach of where one can windsurf and swim, surrounded by some truly dramatic scenery

There is so much more to do in this area, including visits to abbeys and churches, or why not spoil yourself at the hot thermal outdoor baths at St Thomas-les-Bains or Moligt-les-Bains. Those who enjoy walking will never tire of the scenery which is made accessible by miles of well-signed mountain paths (Grandes Randonnées).
The gites are located less than 10 minutes away from Vernet Les Bains. A beautiful village described by Rudyard Kipling as 'the paradise of the Pyrenees'.There are several indoor and outdoor thermal baths and swimming pools in and around the village. The weekly market is real treat.
Throughout the summer there are many events and attractions held in the village square

Nearby Roussillon is the largest wine producing area in France, with many routes for the enthusiasts among you.

Villefranche de Conflent Area

Villefranche de Conflent dates from the late 11th century, and nestles at the confluence of two rivers - the Cady and the Tet, at the foot of high mountains.
The village fortifications still surround the village, which consists of streets of attractive pink-coloured stone houses from around the 13th century. The fortifications were strengthened in the 17th century by Vauban.
It is the walls that have helped the town preserve its authenticity and attractiveness - there is little space to spoil in such a confined space!


The colourful town of Prades is a small Catalan market town of 6000 inhabitants is less than 10 minutes drive. It boasts a wonderful market selling local Muscat wine and Catalan paella on Tuesdays and Saturdays morning. It is also home to the Pablo Casals music festival held every July/August. With its café-lined main square and beautiful church it’s a lovely place to while away the hours.
Mt Canigou can be approached either on foot following waterfalls and deep rock pools or by 4x4 jeeps - more gentle walks can be found along the narrow canal which meanders through the woods close to the village.
For nature lovers the narrow-gauge Little Yellow Train which leaves from Villefranche-de-Conflent mountains and is an excellent way to discover the region. For birdwatchers, the woods and valley below the villa is bird paradise and artists will find the local landscape and coastal villages greatly inspiring.

Fly direct from Ireland to Carcassone or Girona in Spain about 1 1/2 hours drive
Fly to direct from Dublin Barcelona (Spain)or Toulouse about 2 1/2 hours away
Ferry available from direct from Ireland to France about 14 hour drive.
Trains available to Villfranche
But Car is recommended, can be hired from all airports.

There is small but well laid out courtyard/garden with seating areas and bar b que, where one can sit and just relax enjoying the ever changing views.
Bikes available on site for the more energetic visitors.
We will also supply maps and guide books, for walking etc. the area caters for the casual walk as well as the more serious.
We arrange guides for walks from our door step, further up the mountians or near to the coast. Thus giving you agreat varitity to choose from.
Wine tours or a mixed tours including vinyards & cultural can be arrranged.

 

Rental Details

The courtyard is solely for our guests, even though the owners live on site.
We also have a small liberary of books, games and DVD's.

Each Gite has an open plan dining, kitchen and lounge area with large sliding door lead to the courtyard and your own outdoor dinning area.
The fully fitted well-equipped kitchen area includes fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, electric oven and gas hob and dinning area
The lounge area has comfortable seating, equipped with TV, DVD, Music Centre, & Free to view Sky Box and internet connection point.
Wooden staircase lead up to the 1 or 2 spacious bedrooms, Master with 5 ft double bed,
wardrobe, and bedside cabinet give plenty of room for storage! 2nd has 3 single beds with sufficient room for an additional one that can be put up if requested, or it can also be set up as a double room. There is a modern bathroom with shower, toilet, and wash-hand basin

• All linen is provided including hand and bath towels. (If you stay more than one week a change is given). Swimming/beach towels are also made available.
• We have a laundry room with washing area, drying and a washing machine. Also an area for storing sports gear, including bikes.
• The gîtes have heating for those who prefer to avoid the summer months and sojourn in the South of France in spring, autumn or winter.
• A small collection of books and DVDs is kept within each gîte as well as an up-to-date supply of local maps and the latest information on events and fêtes happening in and around the Pyrenees Oriental throughout the year.
• The courtyard has patio furniture with parasol, sun chairs and BBQ, and enjoys full sun all day, becoming shadier towards aperitif time!
• A welcome pack to greet you including a wee drop!
• A2 basic larder is supplied……nothing worse then going holiday and having to buy salt etc..

.The property enjoys one of the most beautiful views in the area,. Majestic Mount Canigou (2785m) which can been seen out of every window, envelopes the whole area.
