The Costa de la Luz/Cadiz Region
The Costa de la Luz is a unique part of Spain on the Atlantic coast which runs from Gibraltar to Ayamonte. and which has thankfully escapes the mass overdevelopment that occured in the other Costas. Miles and miles of sandy beaches which traditionally and still are the favoured holiday destination of the Spanish coming from Seville and other parts of Andalusia. It is very different to the other Costas in that for instance you won't find Irish or English bars on every corner or cafes and restaurants serving typical British food. The Costa de la Luz is smetimes referred to as the Spanish Algarve but it bears no resemblance to the highly developed Western Algarve.
Ayamonte enjoys a fabulous location on the banks of the River Guadiana which forms the border between Spain and Portugal. With a population of 20,000 it retains the feel of a small town and is first and foremost a vibrant Spanish town where fishing still plays a big part in the local economy. Ayamonte oozes character and is higly regarded by the Spanish who live in other parts of Huelva province as a cultural, tourist and shopping destination. There is nothing as relaxing as having a coffee or beer in one of the town's squares where you can sit side by side with the locals who are noted for their friendliness.
Ayamonte Area
There are many fiestas and festivals during the year especially Las Angustias in August, Romeria in May, and many others.
Bullfighting takes place two or three times a year with the most important event in September to coincide with Las Angustias. There are a host of other fiestas in neighbouring towns like Lepe, Isla Cristina, Punto Moral and Villa Real de Santa Antonio in Portugal. A river cruise is on the Guadiana is very special and the nearest water park is the Aquapolis in Cartaya - 30 minutes away.
