Best Seafood:
Pacific Café (This is my all time favorite.)
7000 Geary Blvd, Cross Street: 34th Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94121-1623
(415) 387-7091
They do not take reservations, so be prepared for a wait, but they do give you a free glass of wine while you wait. It is a nice 9 block walk, it is always packed, the best time to go is before 6pm or after 9pm.
The food is fantastic, Very hearty portions of fish with a choice of sides: boiled red potatoes, steak-cut fries, rice pilaf and a choice of shrimp Louie salad or soup for a starter. The Parmesan crusted halibut is one of my favorites, also the stuffed trout. The staff are all very friendly, they will never steer you wrong if you ask them for a recommendation. Oh, and the icing on the cake is the wine while you wait. Not the finest, but hey, it's free. The decor is warm--dark wood, orangey walls--very cozy. ”
American:
Bill's Place
2315 Clement St (Cross Street: 24th Avenue)
San Francisco, CA 94121
(415) 221-5262
The bustling interior is built like a classic New York City diner--complete with a long row of vinyl counter seats. Only a pleasant outdoor patio betrays its California locale, along with a creative list of gourmet burgers named after local celebrities. An offbeat, presidential dinner plate collection hangs on one wall, and incongruous crystal chandeliers lend a quirky, vintage atmosphere. Old-fashioned breakfasts, sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, fountain drinks and other diner treats complete the menu. The kids' menu features a fabulous list of pint-sized specialties named for Bill's daughter Pearl.
French:
Chapeau!
1408 Clement St (Cross Street: 15th Avenue)
San Francisco, CA 94118
(415) 750-9787
It’s a nice 10 block walk; this is a small Family run French restaurant,
Food is excellent and the prices are reasonable.
Make reservations, it is always busy.
Diners can't help but feel coddled in a setting that manages to be warm and inviting, despite being packed with neighborhood folks. Surrounded by butter-yellow walls and proficient staff, owners Phillipe and Ellen Gardelle weave through the small space, chatting up regulars and offering sage advice on what to order.
The menu features familiar bistro fare with innovative twists. French onion soup arrives roiling in an earthenware crock, while a cylindrical mound of rabbit rillettes is paired with both the traditional cornichon and a pool of candied kumquats. Classic sauces are one of the kitchen's strengths, like sauce perigourdine, a demi-glace finished with Madeira and chopped truffles that swaths diagonal slices of New York steak, or the bread-mopping-worthy reduction that envelops veal sweetbreads topped with filaments of deep-fried leek. Desserts veer from an over-the-top warm chocolate-banana cake with caramel ice cream to a refreshing trio of sorbets.
Tia Margarita Mexican Restaurant
300 19TH Ave and Clement, ( 6 Blocks)
San Francisco, CA 94121
(415) 752-9274
“Giant portions! Good Food! Good margaritas! I think it has a fun atmosphere too. ”
Tommy's Mexican Restaurant
5929 Geary Blvd (Cross Street: 23rd Avenue)
San Francisco, CA 94121
(415) 387-4747
At night, boisterous 20- and 30-somethings fill the red vinyl booths and a small bar gets crowded quickly. With fresh ingredients and the best selection of tequila this side of the Rio Grande, Tommy's makes a mean margarita. The vast Mexican menu includes combination platters as well as Yucatecan specialties like poc chuc (broiled pork served in roasted tomato sauce).
Thai:
Khan Toke Thai House
5937 Geary Blvd. (at 24th Avenue)
San Francisco
Tel. (415) 668-6654
Wear clean socks, you have to take your shoes off to enter the restaurant,
Overall good food and great dining experience.
Khan Toke Thai is so traditional you're asked to remove your shoes before being seated. Popular for special occasions, this Richmond District fixture is easily the prettiest Thai restaurant in the city; lavishly carved teak interiors evoke the ambience of a Thai temple.
To start, order the tom yam gong soup of lemon grass, shrimp, mushroom, tomato, and cilantro. Follow with such well-flavored dishes as ground pork with fresh ginger, green onion, peanuts, and lemon juice; prawns with hot chilies, mint leaves, lime juice, lemon grass, and onions; or chicken with cashews, crispy chilies, and onions. For a real treat, have the deep-fried pompano topped with sautéed ginger, onions, peppers, pickled garlic, and yellow-bean sauce; or deep-fried red snapper with "three-flavors" sauce and basil leaves. A complete dinner, including appetizer, soup, salad, two main courses, dessert, and coffee, is a great value.
Chinese
Best delivery:
Go Go Café,
415 661 4289
The best Chinese for delivery, if you like Crab, try the salt & Pepper fried crab,
They do not list the crab or Lobster specials on the menu; just ask the guy what’s on special,
The crab is very cheap in crab season. They have a $20 minimum order for delivery.
Ton Kiang
5821 Geary Blvd (Cross Street: 22nd Avenue)
San Francisco, CA 94121
(415) 387-8273
Best known for Hong Kong-style dim sum, there's also a Hakka-focused menu offered at dinnertime. Highlights include minced squab with lettuce leaves and velvety salt-baked chicken. Specialties such as delicate seafood clay-pot casseroles are sure to please. An endless parade of dim sum dishes stream out of the kitchen--adventurous diners can eat for a half hour and not see repeat items. Standard favorites are well-represented, such as perfect pork buns and steamed dumplings stuffed with delicate fillings like scallop, shrimp, green chive or pea tips. Heads-on roasted shrimp are sensationally smoky, and crisp-skinned duck is meltingly tender.
Best Vietnamese:
La Vie Vietnamese Restaurant
5830 Geary Blvd (Cross Street: 22nd Avenue)
San Francisco, CA 94121
415-668-8080
After one of my guests wrote a reccomendation for La Vie in the guest book, we decided to give it a try. The first impression right after entering the place is the detailed decoration and atmosphere, which gives warm, relaxing feeling. This is an excellent place for romantic dinner date. The Vietnamese dishes served here are refined, meticulously prepared unlike most ordinary Viet restaurants in the city. I highly recommend "La Vie" s Roasted Garlic Crab. Watching the friendly waiter take out the live crab from the seafood tank and tasting the aromatic, sweet, delicious, savory crab is wondrous. We also tried the Pork Belly and Coconut, a Vietnamase pork saute'd to perfection combined with the buttery taste of coconut and Vietnamese spices. There is also an extensive wine list to match the dishes. The waiters are very formally dressed, courteous and attentive. We had a very plesant experience. We give "La Vie" a 10 !!!
Italian:
Ernesto's Pizza Restaurant
2301 Clement St @ 24th Ave
San Francisco, CA 94121
415-386-1446
Ernesto’s is a friendly, regular kind of Italian restaurant, where the food is consistently hearty, and the staff is warm and casual. The prices are a real draw as well, so it’s usually busy. The house salad with tangy vinaigrette is a great way to start. Then move on to linguini with clams or vegetarian lasagna. It may not be the most creative Italian cuisine, but it’s got a homemade quality that is very appealing. This eatery serves up Italian cooking. Expect the average entrée to cost $8 to $12, and you’ll be fine if dressed casual.
Moroccan (Nice Belly Dancers!!)
Aziza
5800 Geary Blvd. (at 22nd Avenue)
San Francisco
Tel. (415) 752-2222
The best way to enjoy the evening -- which includes a sexy, somewhat exotic environment complete with belly dancing throughout the night -- is to order the chef's five-course tasting menu ($39). You'll get a huge platter of appetizers, which includes a vibrant marinated salad with cumin-dusted carrots, roasted bell peppers and honeyed beets and some Mediterranean spreads -- an almost frothy eggplant mousse, sun-dried-tomato hummus and tapenade with grilled pita bread. The menu then segues into the soup course, either a lemon-lightened green lentil soup or a soup of the day. The bastilla, an intricate puff pastry pie dusted with powdered sugar and filled with a ground chicken mixture, is another exceptional course. Diners have a choice of a dozen or more main courses (from $12 to $20 a la carte). Lahlou is a master at cooking couscous; it's so light it seems as if each tiny grain has been pumped with air. It's served with many of the meat items or as a vegetarian main course with vegetables. His signature dish is a saffron Cornish hen, infused with the flavor of preserved Meyer lemon in a saffron sauce with pink olives and bright orbs of cherry tomatoes. The play of flavors is extraordinary, as it is in the braised lamb shank with a honey-kumquat sauce with caramelized dried fruits, roasted almonds and cinnamon-cranberry couscous. With so many elements, it could become muddled or overly sweet, but the chef really knows how to balance flavors. The braised rabbit tagine is filled with tender meat glistening in a paprika sauce. It's served over a parsnip mash and dotted with yellow pear tomatoes and olives, which provide bursts of pungent saltiness. The desserts have the same light flair: a cream brulee with lemon verbena, or meringue profiteroles with apricot sorbet and a garnish of melon and mint syrup. The chocolate raspberry truffle cake is made even more intense by a vibrant blackberry-Cabernet Sauvignon sorbet and fresh raspberries.
Best View and Tourist Restaurant
Sutro's, at the Cliff House
1090 Point Lobos San Francisco
Tel. (415) 386-3330
If you feel like a really good walk,
Its about 20 blocks, turn right when you leave the apartment and keep walking, Geary turns in to Point Lobos.
Housed in the new Sutro Wing this addition to the Cliff House features a spectacular two story dining room with the quietly chic Sutro's Bar and a Balcony Lounge on the street level. You can see the Marin coast line, the Sutro Bath ruins, the entry to the Golden Gate and, of course, the Pacific Ocean. You feel like you’re on an elegant ocean liner.
Sutro's at The Cliff House is a fine dining establishment that focuses on organic produce, great service, top fresh seafood and local ingredients that are farmed using sustainable practices. House Smoked Salmon “Pastrami” W/Cucumber Avocado Salad, Dungeness Crab “Sutro Roll” W/Chili Garlic, Maine Lobster And Dungeness Crab Cakes W/Roasted Corn & Black Bean Salsa are just a sampling of the creative starters that you might find. Entrees might include Seared Day Boat Scallops with English Pea & Lemon Beurre Rouge, Black And White Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna with Teriyaki Lentils and Kurobuta Pork Chop with Red Hawk “Mac&Cheese”, braised Lacinato Kale & Ruby Port Jus.
Best Sushi –
Kitaro - the best value in Sushi; just judge it by the crowds waiting to get a table. It is so packed sometimes, that I just order to go and enjoy it at home.
Best Breakfast or Brunch - there is a dive place a few doors away, don’t judge it by appearances, its run by a Chinese Family, and the breakfast is very good.
Best Irish Bar in the City: in my opinion the best Irish bar in San Francisco is OReilly’s on Green Street in the North Beach area of the city. It’s a bit to far from the apartment to be a “Local Bar” but if you are in North Beach make sure you drop by for a Beer.
The best Irish Bar close to the apartment is Ireland’s 32 on Geary @ 3rd Ave. I usually walk the 22 blocks to the Bar, so I really need a beer by the time I get there. If you don’t feel like walking the 22 blocks take the bus, its only $1.50 (exact change only) - keep the bus ticket, its good for the return journey within 2 hours.
The Blarney Stone is just a few blocks away, on Geary @ 19th Ave - it can be good on midweek nights, but on weekends they have some crazy DJ music.
Trader Sam’s is just a few doors away; it’s a great people watching place, it gets all types, from 21 year olds sipping exotic cocktails, to seasoned old drunks drowning Budweiser’s.
Best Show to go to:
DON’T MISS THIS SHOW!
BEACH BLANKET BABYLON
It is the longest running; hit musical revue in theatre history. The Show premiered at the Savoy Tivoli in San Francisco's North Beach, June, 1974. I have seen this show about 10 times and it gets better every time. Box Office Phone number (415) 421-4222 - I almost forgot its right beside OReilly’s Irish Bar, so have drinks before or after the show.

All was well. We greatly enjoyed your cute apartment and would recommend it to anyone. Our boys loved TV's and Play Station
We had no trouble with parking and loved the convenience of De Lano's, the coffee place across the street, and the awesome Dim Sum at Lucky Sun. Even though there is a big line outside the wait is only 15 minutes. Also, loved the convenience of being close to the GGB, since we had to go to Marin 3 times during our stay.
Thank you,
Michele and Scott

After 6 months on the road it was wonderful to find ourselves in such a lovely appartment. We had a fantastic stay in San Fran, in fact we came back after a month and spent a further few days there. The appartment was fab, providing us with all we could possble want by way of facilities (and very stylishly too) and the location was great. Thank you Paul - we hope to come back some time.
Sally, Jonathan and Maddie, London, UK
We had a great time in Paul’s apartment; it is very well equipped, great location, Ideal for our family, 2 adults and 2 children.
Paul’s list of restaurants was very helpful and also the Bus passes saved us a lot of money. We did not rent a car, rode the buses everywhere, got to see San Francisco from a local’s perspective.
I would totally recommend the apartment.
