The Northeast Brazil Region

Natal is located 4 degrees south of the equator, is one of the friendliest and safest capital cities in Brazil and is one of the closest to Europe.
It was originally colonised by the dutch and the portuguese and is therefore steeped in history.
The locals (known as Nordestinos) are renowned for their warmth, their style and their gentle attitude to life and they are genuinely pleased to see foreigners.
The area certainly has its own charisma, which is quite different from Rio & Sao Paulo, but is nonetheless very lively.
The natural beauty of the area around Natal is stunning with miles of unspoiled beaches, small fishing villages and inland lakes and dunes.
Natal itself is a modern and fast growing city and, Ponta Negra is located about 15 km. away along the coast.
The climate is superb all year round, with gentle sea breezes to reduce the effect of the heat.
The sea temperature is around 28-30 Degrees all year round and the beaches are excellent for surfing but, at the same time very safe for children.

 

Natal Area

Carnatal at the beginning of December is the city's separate and extravagant party which lasts for 4 days.
There is of course the main carnaval which is usuallly around the end of February.
You can stay in the resort of Ponta Negra (either on the beaches or using the 4/5 star hotel facilities), but it is well worthwhile exploring the beaches up and down the coast, either by car on the standard roads or by hiring a beach buggy and going direct !
A major golf course development is under construction about 25 miles away
Night life varies from the many bars playing low key music to modern night clubs or the more traditional Forro dance clubs.
Restaurants are generally of an excellent quality and very cheap to eat at. The level of service is on the whole of a higher standard than in Europe.

Getting There

There are direct weekly flights from London Gatwick to Natal between November and April (with Thomson Fly)
Alternatively, there are regular flights with TAP (portuguese airlines) direct from Lisbon or flights via. Sao Paulo (which is connected to most European hubs) although this adds significant time to the journey.
Flight time from London to Natal is 9.5 hours / Lisbon to Natal is 7.5 hours.
There are several car hire companies based at the airport or alternatively within 2 km. of the villa.
It takes 20 minutes to drive from the airport to the villa. (Taxi fare approx. 25 euros)
