The Northern Estonia Region

Estonia is located in Northern Europe, on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.
Estonia’s neighbours are Russia, Latvia, Sweden and Finland. With an area of 45 000 sq. km, Estonia is larger than for example Slovenia, Holland, Denmark or Switzerland, yet the population is ten times smaller comparing to the Netherland (1 439 197 people in Estonia as of 1 January 2000).
As in other northern countries, seasons vary widely in Estonia. The length of the longest day in summer Midsummer Day is almost 19 hours, while the shortest winter day lasts only 6 hours. It is not completely dark at night from the beginning of May until the end of July.

The weather in Estonia is considerably milder than the continental climate characteristic of the same latitude. The temperature in the summer months (June–September) is typically 15…18ºC; in winter, –4…–5ºC. Estonian weather offers many surprises. Temperatures may fluctuate by 20º C; in the early morning the thermometer might read –12ºC and by afternoon it may already be 10ºC. Although it doesn't always snow in winter, there tends to be about 10 cm of snow on the ground consistently from late December through to the beginning of March or even April.

The climate conditions and relief of the region have caused formation of numerous small inland water bodies in the territory of Estonia.
There are many rivers in Estonia, the majority of which are short and have a relatively small runoff. In dry summers, some of the rivers may temporarily dry out. During spring floods, however, large areas may be flooded. Only ten rivers are longer than 100 km.
The longest river in the central part of Estonia is the Pärnu River (144 km). For Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, the Pirita River is of utmost importance as its water is discharged via a canal into Lake Ülemiste, which supplies Tallinn with municipal water.
In the territory of Estonia there are about 1200 natural lakes whose water area exceeds 1 ha. Many of them are located in the uplands of South Estonia.
Creation of artificial water bodies, mainly to ensure operation of water mills, has been relatively common in Estonia throughout the centuries. To date, approximately 150 such artificial lakes have been preserved. In order to diversify landscapes and create swimming possibilities, new artificial lakes have been constructed in the vicinity of large settlements. The largest artificial lake is the Narva Water Reservoir at the Narva River.

Tallinn Area

Tallinn is best know for its Old Town which belongs to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List and despite many wars and rulers from east and west has preserved very well.
You have possibility to live in the upper part of Old Town at Toompea Hill close to the view platforms and Parliament House.
During summer time the Old Town Days and medieval markets are held in the Old Town of Tallinn and every winter Christmas Market opens and Santa Claus meets the children on Town Hall Square. There are also many symbols from Soviet Times to explore in Estonia.
For visiting the open-air museum in Rocca Al Mare or Kadriorg Palace with its garden which was built as summer residents for Catherine by her husband tsar Peter I you can just take City Tour bus from the city centre or buy a Tallinn Card.
The city is not just full of museums, also small and cosy cafes, restaurants of different cuisines, bars, clubs and shopping centres, boutiques as well as spa and beauty salons are easy to find and nearby.
