The Languedoc-Roussillon Region

Capestang is a beautiful 13c village on the Canal du Midi, and is surrounded by lovely vineyards and woods for walking and cycling and riding. There are lots of very good markets in this area, both for wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables and general goods. The coast is 20 mins away with sandy beaches, some excellent fish restaurants and the fish market of Sete. For history there is the ancient walled city of Carcasonne, the roman town of Narbonne, and the city of Perpignan. Montpellier, the buzzing university town, is only an hour away. Spain is only an 1 1/2 drive away and has a very different style to France. Or just sit by the pool with a book.

Capestang Area

There is a wonderful market in the village every Wednesday and Saturday, as well as regular wine and cheeze tastings locally. Local activities surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking. Thereis a large supermarket on the edge of the village, and numerous smaller shops within easy wlaking distance, including a Patisserie, Boulangerie, Traiteur, Tabac, a number of Pharmacies etc. Within walking distance of six or seven restaurants too.

Getting There

HOW TO GET THERE
By rail
Check with Rail Europe or SNCF for special fares from London to Narbonne or Bezier. The Eurostar and TGV (high-speed rail that can take a car) are also available. With one change this takes only about 8 hours.
From Ireland you can also book directly through Iarnrod Eireann European rail section 01 7031885
The Eurostar which leaves regularly from London’s Waterloo Station and connects via the high-speed TGV (click here) at Lille (very simple - same station) or Paris (across town - not so simple) to Montpellier (1 hr), Beziers* (20 mins.) and Narbonne* (20 mins.) where it’s possible to rent a car. The trip is approx eight stress- free hours to Montpellier (and can be inexpensive - especially the TGV leg) and provides glorious views of the French countryside from a comfortable window seat or a stool in the bar car.

Of course you could combine the two and fly to Barcelona, pick up the train to Narbonne or Beziers and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Pyrenees, too. Some people flying from Scotland or Northern Europe may find this much easier.

* If you’re taking the train to Beziers or Narbonne and because they are often not listed as stops on the TGV website (the train goes local after Montpellier), simply purchase a ticket to Perpignon and get off at either station - it’s all the same price after Montpellier. You can catch the return train there, too by simply checking the departure time from Perpignon.

By air
Carcassonne
Our nearest airport is Carcassonne, served by Ryanair from Dublin, London Stansted and Charleroi, Belgium. Taxis from Carcassonne cost about 85 euros one-way,

Perpignan
Ryanair also fly from London Stansted, Charleroi (Brussels) and Frankfurt (Germany) to Perpignan, which is almost as close to us.

Nîmes
If you're on a budget and/or keen to see more of the Midi, consider flying Ryanair from Stansted to Nîmes. These fares are often cheaper, and the airport bus connects directly with Nîmes railway station, from where trains run frequently to Narbonne, about 15km from our base.

Montpellier & Toulouse
Other airports in the general area are Montpellier (British Airways, Air France, Ryanair, etc) & Toulouse (Aer Lingus, www.aerlingus.ie British Airways, Air France, British European, BMI Baby etc). Both offer easy connections by bus and train to Narbonne, or Bezier.

Spain
Another holiday option would incorporate a charter flight to Gerona in NE Spain, or a budget airline flight to Barcelona .
Barcelona can be reached by Easy Jet from Luton, Gatwick, Liverpool, Amsterdam and Geneva, by Go from East Midlands, Stansted and Bristol, and by BMI Baby from East Midlands.
Only a 2 hour drive from Barcelona to our place.

Guest Book

Beautiful location, lovely house

We spent a magical week in this beautiful house. The location is perfect, close to all the amenities of the town, including the weekly market, which made it great for the teenagers of the family. It's also close to the Canal du Midi, which makes for wonderful walks, and we went to a nearby town to rent a canal boat for a day. The pool is lovely, in a walled garden with a big table under an arbor where all of us could dine together. A lovely, comfortable house with everything we needed.
Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Girls Getaway, Tourists without a Car, and Sightseeing
