The apartment :
Luztur is one of the older complexes in Luz and it is well maintained, it has a Spar supermarket, a coffee shop, a chemist and a news agent. The apartment itself has been completely refurbished in the past year, new kitchen, new bathroom, flooring, double glazing, it is a beautiful duplex apartment on the 8th floor, serviced by an elevator (2 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs) with a stunning bird's eye view of the whole of Luz village. The master bedroom is looking out towards the ocean so it has the same view as from the balcony. The second bedroom looks out towards the cliff so you can also catch the sunrise. The apartment can comfortably sleep four. The living room is spacious and well lit with the kitchen right by the entrance. Luztur is the tallest complex in Luz and as the apartment is an end apartment it has the best panoramic view in all of Luz, sitting on the balcony you have over 180 degree view from Sunrise to Sunset. The sunrises are stunning, rising over the sea close to the Rocha Negra cliffs at the far end of the beach. The sunset is slightly obscured, however you catch the warm glow on Rocha Negra and the stunning afterglow in the night sky. It is a perfect setting to sit out and have your aperitif before you stroll down to one of the many restaurants in the village. It is ideally suited to an independent couple or couples who want to go off hiking or walking and afterwards spend time on the balcony enjoying the view, having lunch or simply soaking up the sun. For those who love the ocean the beach is a five minute walk or there are steps down by the Bull pub opposite the church which is a much nicer, quieter, and more secluded swimming area for those who dislike crowded beaches. As it is more sheltered it is also less windy than the main beach.
The apartment is not suitable for the elderly because it is a duplex.

The Algarve Region

THE ALGARVE

Situated in the extreme southerly part of this beautiful country, The Algarve in Portugal was the last area to be conquered from the Moors by the Portuguese king in 1292. Traces of the Moorish presence are still seen in its unique architecture - terraces, chimneys and whitewashed houses.

With the hot summer sun and mild winters, the Algarve is the perfect destination for a summer holiday or for a winter break to escape the dull days of winter at home. The beaches here are as varied as its regions and it is always possible to discover a secluded paradise.

The climate is one of the healthiest and most pleasant in the world, comparable to California. There is sufficient seasonal variation to make the weather anything but boring but winters are never too cold and summers never too hot.The skies are predominantly blue all year round. It is a great all year round destination.

The Algarve has managed to retain its old world charm and traditional values even though tourism is it's major economic activity. It is both a place to relax and do little or if you prefer indulge your in active outdoor pursuits in the clean fresh air and sunshine. The region is best known for its spectacular coastline, including scores of glorious beaches. Less known, but equally attractive is its hinterland of vineyards, olive, almond and fig trees, rising to rolling hills.

There are opportunities to enjoy all water sports, golf and horse riding.

The Zoo marine sea life centre is 49 minutes away, together with a large Waterpark, Slide and Splash.

Praia da Luz Area

PRAIA DA LUZ (meaning Beach of Light)

Luz is in the Western Algarve, a small sleepy traditional Portuguese village just 5km from the historical town of Lagos which is the major town in the area. The beach and pace of life make it ideal for a very relaxing holiday. From the atmospheric Fortaleza overlooking the rugged cliffs, you can stroll along the promenade towards the beautiful beach, and enjoy a coffee along the way in one of the many small sea front restaurants.

There are a good choice of restaurants in Luz and if you like seafood, you won't be disappointed.
There are also good cafes/restaurants and take-aways that are reasonably priced. There is a very good Portuguese run restaurant on the beach itself which is not overly priced.

There are now 2 local supermarkets right beside the apartment, a recently opened SPAR in the same block, you simply take the elevator downstairs. It has a good choice of products and is good value. The other supermarket is Baptista's which is just across the road from the apartment block entrance. They have a coffee shop with an outside seating area and sell foreign newspapers. FYI,they are open from 8am to 8pm except Sundays when they close at 1pm. In the same complex as the apartment there is a chemist, newsagents, internet café. Across the road from Baptista’s there is a gift shop which also sells beach sundries.

Hiking : For the adventurous there is a great hike up to the top of Rocha Negra which you can access from the end of the beach (from the apartment you can see the Obelisk at the top). There is a brilliant view of the whole of Luz from here and it is well worth going up, especially at sunrise or just before sunset. This leads to a stunning walk along the cliff top, where you will reach the beautiful and much less crowded beach of Praia Ana in around 40 minutes. There is a lovely restaurant here which is well worth a visit for lunch or a relaxing drink. If you want to go further you can continue on to Lagos which will take around another 30 minutes. I have included details of this hike, other walks and places of interest in your Welcome Package.

Sight seeing : Down the coast you can pass some lovely small beaches and what is well worth a visit is Sagres, the most south easterely point in Europe. The views are magnificent and the beach is stunning. Depending on the conditions there can be excellent surfing waves here.

The gypsy markets are another point of interest for anybody interested in a little shopping. They sell a wealth of goods from leather to jewellery. Close by are many small fishing villages, a wealth of intimate little coves and beautiful clean beaches to explore. Inland there are towns such as Silves, with its huge Moorish castle, and the market town of Monchique. It is a stunning drive up to Monchique with it’s winding mountainous roads and the scent of Eucalyptus trees all around.

PRAIA DA LUZ BEACH
Praia da Luz has a gently shelving beach, with soft golden sands. The remnants of volcanic activity from long ago can been seen at the far end of the beach, know locally as the Rocha Negra or 'Black Rock'. Behind the beach are some very impressive multicoloured sandstone cliffs, greens, pinks oranges all sorts of colours - Very pretty and worth a closer look.

If you look out from the balcony you will see all the activity on the beach and if you grab the binoculars you can get a closer look at the microlights coming over the hill and past the apartment. Very impressive.

The beach has it's own Blue Flag as well as full time professional life guards on duty all the time during the summer months. It is great for all kinds of water sports made available by 'Algarve Watersports' & 'The Beach Hut', the two centres on the beach. There is an area cordoned off by buoys and ropes where ALL boats must enter the beach, boats and swimmers just don't mix! Which makes it somewhat safer for those of you who just want to float around on your inflatables and catch the sun.

Occasionally the Atlantic Rollers come in and it's time to grab your bodyboard or surfboard and have some serious fun !!
If surfing is your thing then and you think that the Algarve has nothing to offer you then you're wrong. There are several groups operating days out to the various breaks, ranging from a 40min journey to an hour or so away. These usually include hire of equipment and wetsuit (if required) and cater for all levels.
Sail or learn to sail from the beach - all levels are catered for.

Luzdoc is the local private medical clinic and caters for almost all emergencies. It can caters for 24-hour requirements if necessary. Luzdoc is located in the Centro.

There are at least two ATMs. One is located at the Centro and the other is in Baptista's.

Internet access is also available in the village.

LAGOS
Lagos is the nearest town. It has lots of history and is well worth a visit. It benefits from a strong summer sun with a cooling breeze. Spring and Autumn weather is glorious with warm fresh days and balmy evening breezes.
Lagos is an old Moorish port. This was the first port to which African slaves were transported. They were sold from Africa across Europe and America. It is still possible to visit the ancient harbour slave cells. The Atlantic is close by and the harbour at Lagos provides fishing, cave trips and pleasure trips all year round.

The town abounds with restaurants and cafes and there is a lively nightlife.
There are plenty of Potuguese run restaurants. One recommendation is a very nice bar/ restaurant called Mullins, just a few minutes from the centre. It is an old Adega which still retains all it’s original features, long wooden tables, stone ceiling and large wine barrels. It has been run by the same Scottish family for over 20 years now. It is popular with locals and tourists, the music and atmosphere is good, playing jazz and blues, and the food is excellent.

Diving, sailing, boat trips, and dolphin safaris are available in the town.

Visit Burgau and Salema. These are two fishing villages a little west of Luz.

Boa Vista is the local golf club located about 3Km away on the road to Lagos. There are other golf clubs in the area, Palmares, Parque De Floresta, Penina, and others only a short car ride away.

Fly to Faro Airport from Ireland with Aerlingus and Ryanair (from Dublin, Belfast, Cork, and Shannon Airports).Car Hire available at airport. Would recommend www.holidayautos.com. Car can be collected at the airport and either left at apartment or left back to airport.

Feel free to contact me if you need further information.

Getting There

Flights from Dublin/Belfast/Cork to Faro with Aer Lingus or Ryanair. Ryanair also fly 3 times weekly from Knock and from Kerry, twice weekly until the end of October. Easyjet from UK. Car journey from Faro is exactly one hour. You can also fly into Lisbon, as flight times might suit better. It is often a lot cheaper depending on the time of year, however you have to factor in extra fuel costs plus tolls of 20 Euro each way. Journey time by car to Luz is just under 3 hours. It is a straight run on the motorway the whole way down to Luz.
