The Cote dAzur/Provence Region

The area is one of the most spectacular regions as you have the beautiful villages of the Alpilles, and then in contrast you can easily explore the marshes and lakes of the wild Carmargue countryside. It is part of the French riviera so it benefits form the climate typical of the Mediterranean as the mountains of the Alps block the cold from the north. There are beautiful gardens and lanscapes typical of the area and flowers are grown for the perfume industry. You will find many fruit orchards and the region is abundant with bananas, dates, prickly pears, olives, grapes and citrus fruit in genreal.

The region is known for its cheese, wine and fantastic gourmet cuisine. The economy is boosted through the produce of lavendar for the perfume industry, vineyards, olive groves and fruit orchards. The climate allows for dry farming with the cultivation of wheat.

 

Arles Area

Arles offers a great wealth of antique and Roman heritage, with UNESCO World Heritage monuments, including the Amphitheatre (the bullring), the Roman theatre, the Church of St Trophime and its cloister, the Constantine Baths, etc. The city is listed as a "City of Art and History".
Tradition: Camargue bull-running in the streets of Arles and bullfighting in the various city bullrings.

Museums : The Museum of Arles and Provence (archaeological remains found in Arles), Fine Arts Museum, traditional arts at the Museon Arlaten (the culture of Provence: the first ethnographic museum in the South of France), Réattu Museum (contemporary art and photography), Museums of Pagan and Christian Lapidary Art.
Vincent Van Gogh and other painters found much inspiration in Arles.

The surrounding area
The Camargue Museum, 12 km away on the road to Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, focuses on changes in the landscape and human activity since the formation of the delta.
Camargue Regional Nature Park, an 85,000-hectare protected site unique in Europe, covered with ponds, marshes, rivers and saltworks, where raising horses and bulls is still a major activity.
Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer: the Gypsy Museum, Baroncelli Museum, Waxworks Museum, the Pont de Gau Bird Sanctuary, etc.
Aigues-Mortes 48 km away: the fortifications (Constance Tower and the ramparts), the Chapels of the White and Grey Penitents.
Les-Baux-de-Provence, 19 km away: the 16th century chapel, Eyguières Gate, Saint Vincent's Square, Chapel of the White Penitents (17th century), Church of Saint Vincent (12th century), Hotel de Manville (16th century), Citadel.
