The Algarve Region

The Algarve is renowned for its warm climate and clean sandy beaches. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean with over 300 days of sunshine a year, although the sea – being the Atlantic – is generally a little cooler, but cleaner. Most of the rainfall is in the Winter months and the temperatures throughout the year are significantly higher than in Northern Europe and other Northern countries. The Summers boast long sunny days with temperatures in the 30sC/90sF.

The long beautiful coastline has amazing beaches of fine sand which are seldom over crowded and there are many delightful rocky coves as well, all of which are worth visiting. There is also a fascinating hinterland of hills and forests, villages and farms, castles and churches to visit.

Places to Visit....

LAGOS is a beautiful town, and is about twenty minutes drive away. There is a great selection of shops, as well as lots of bars and restaurants. The yacht marina is a stunning attraction and a recent addition to the town.

PORTIMAO is more of a commercial centre than a tourist town, but has recently smartened up its waterside areas and is well worth a visit. If anything the shops here are better and more varied than in Lagos. Look out for the pedestrianised streets as this is where most of the good shops are.

PRAIA DA ROCHA has one of the best beaches on the Algarve, but has been a little bit over developed some years ago. However, if you are looking for some lively night life, this is the place to come. It is a cheap taxi ride from the apartment at Alto.
Between Praia da Rocha and Portimao is another new Marina, which is surrounded by recently built bars and restaurants. One of the ‘places to be seen’.

CAPE St VINCENT is the most Westerly point in Europe, and reputedly has the most powerful lighthouse in Europe. This bit of coastline is on a par with the Cliffs of Moher for magnificent, rugged coastal scenery. Take a coat, when the wind blows, there is nothing but ocean between you and America!

SAGRES is the last town on the road West towards Cape St Vincent. There are some nice beaches here, but the main attraction is the fortress of Henry the Navigator, parts of which date back to the 15th century.

This is truly a place for the whole family to enjoy and many return year after year.

 

Alvor Area

The main beach in Alvor has over 4 miles of white sand and has fantastic facilites incl restaurants, bars, sun loungers and umberellas (Alto Club guests benefit from complimentary sun loungers and umberellas on the beach).

The beach at Vau has stunning well photographed rock faces, coves and connects directly to beach at Prai Da Rocha for that lovely stroll along the waters edge.

The village of Alvor itself has gently evolved over the past few years to cater for the discerning traveller, while it still manages to retain it's old world charm with cobbled streets and white washed buildings. It is reknowned for it's fantastic fish restaurants, although there are restaurants to suit every taste incl italian, chinese, indian and traditional portuguese. There is also a great selection of bars and shops and in high season the street traders and musicians add colour and life to the streets.

Golf courses - most of an extremely high standard - are in great abundance in the Algarve, however guests at Alto Club can avail of generous discounts in Alto Golf Club and other Pestana owned Golf Course's. The Alto Golf Club facilities include a driving range, putting green, pitching area complete with bunkers, trolley and club hire, pro shop, bar and restauruant.
Other activities for the whole family include Slide & Splash (Waterpark), Sealife Ocean Safaris, the zoo at Barao Sao Joao (north west of Lagos), hill walking and cycling.

The nearest airport is Faro which 75km away or approximately a 50 minute drive.

Access to the sun terrace is through the lounge. The terrace gets the sun from morning to early evening. Patio furniture comprises of table, 6 chairs & 2 sun loungers. This is in a quiet part of the Pestana Golf Course with a quiet shared pool with large selection of sun loungers available at the pool side including, toilet and shower facilities. Has the added attraction of being a short stroll to Vau beach if the pool area becomes to warm.
