The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast Region

The coastline from Lisbon up to Porto makes up the Costa de Prata, the Silver Coast, which gets its name from the effect of the sun on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It has retained a traditional Portuguese culture and way-of-life away from mass tourism. This is an area of protected and outstanding natural beauty with spectacular cliffs, pristine beaches and local towns and villages steeped in history.
The Silver Coast has plenty of places to visit, from quiet traditional fishing villages to wineries and vineyards. Its long sandy beaches are ideal for windsurfers, surfers and sun worshipers. Some of the country’s most impressive architectural, religious and historical sites can be found in this region. Sample mouth-watering local cuisine, in particular the seafood - accompanied of course, by the excellent local wine. The Silver Coast truly has something for everyone and you will enjoy spending time in a protected area of such outstanding natural beauty.
To the south, the beautiful coast of Estoril north of Lisbon offers many other beaches and historic attractions such as Cascais and the royal palace at Sintra – and of course, Lisbon itself is well worth a few days of anybody’s time. To the north, the Fatima pilgrimage centre, Batalha monastery and the 13th century monastery at Alcobaca are some of the other places of interest.
Portugal's Western region is blessed with a mild year round climate typical of southern Europe creating ideal conditions for all sorts of outdoor activities. It is a land of vineyards and lush green valleys set between the Montejunto mountains and the Atlantic ocean.
Eating out in this region is both affordable and satisfying. There are top-class restaurants, which are excellent value for money. Seafood is obviously a speciality and can be enjoyed with a good white wine of the region.
This is an exceptionally friendly and welcoming area, you will find it pleasurable to spend time in quieter part of Portugal less frequented by tourists.

 

Obidos Area

Within easy reach of the Praia D'El Rey resort is the medieval town of Óbidos, a jewel of Portuguese National Heritage. Conquered from the Moors in 1148, the town was given as a wedding gift by the King of Portugal to the new Queen. Encircled by a ring of medieval walls and crowned by the Moorish castle the narrow cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed houses; shops are piled high with local handicrafts. Óbidos also boasts the most spectacular natural lagoon, the ideal spot for sailing, windsurfing or just relaxing by its tranquil waters – perfect for small children.
As well as being a fishing town with an abundance of excellent seafood restaurants on its promenade, Peniche is one of the most famous surfing resorts in Portugal, with its coastline all around the peninsular you can always find a great surfing spot suitable for all ranging from beginner to expert level. Nearby is Baleal surfing beach and the lively bars and restaurants around its shores. The region is also famous for its handicraft such as pottery, tiles, bobbin lace making, tannery, straw baskets and wood carvings.
Just off the coast from Praia D'El Rey and easily accessible by boat from Peniche, are the spectacular Berlenga Islands with medieval fort - their towering cliffs sheltering crystal waters. It's the perfect spot for year-round diving or deep-sea fishing. The islands are a nature reserve with nesting sites along the rugged cliffs and coves.
In addition to the on-site general store, there is a small supermarket in Serra D’el Rei (10 minutes) and larger supermarkets in Peniche (15 min), Obidos (15 min) and Caldas da Rainha (20 min). There is a chemist and post office in Serra D’el Rei and there is also a street market in the main square in Caldas da Rainha every morning.

 

Getting There

Praia D’El Rey is approximately 1 hours drive from Lisbon, 2.5 hours drive from Porto or 3.5 hours drive from Faro. All of these locations have airports which are serviced by budget and scheduled airlines from many different countries/cities.

The situation of the apartment allows easy access to all amenities on the resort, being located next to the championship tennis courts and resort shop and 10 minutes by foot from the Clubhouse and driving range and 15 minutes from the beach and the hotel. There is parking adjacent to the apartment and all resort amenities are easily reached by car within a few minutes.

The large living room has a corner fireplace and patio doors in the lounge area open directly on to the shared swimming pool. The lounge area is equipped with satellite TV, DVD player, music system, 2-seater settee and 2 armchairs. The dining area has a table and seating for 6 and a terrace. The separate kitchen with a terrace is fully equipped and has oven, hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, kettle, toaster and coffee machine. There is a patio table and 4 chairs which can be used inside the kitchen or on the terrace overlooking the shared pool. The master bedroom has a double bed and wardrobes whilst the second bedroom has twin beds and wardrobes. The bathroom has bath with shower over, toilet and bidet.
