The Mayo Region
Located off the coast of Mayo, Achill is Irelands largest and most beautiful island. It is joined to the mainland by a newly re-constructed bridge at Achill Sound. Achill Island has amazing scenery in its mountains, hills, lakes, bogs, cliffs and many "Blue Flag" beaches. Its impressive cliffs and mountains have inspired many artists including the German Nobel Prize Winner - Heinrich Boll, whose house at Dugort remains a magnet for German visitors.
Another attraction of the Island is the Deserted Village situated near Slievemore Cemetery. The Deserted Village built in the 17th Century was a communal style village, whose inhabitants were forced to abandon their houses during the famine in order to move nearer the sea for survival.
