This beautiful holiday home offers luxurious and spacious self-catering accommodation in the centre of Kinsale for up to thirteen people.

This accommodation for so many guests does not mean that there is less room or comfort for more people to share; rather, the house includes all the best aspects of a comfortable holiday : There are three shower rooms, one with a bath if that’s your preference; there is ample space to relax too, with two large living rooms, both comfortably furnished and equipped; and perhaps the greatest benefit to any large group taking full advantage of the house is the additional kitchen. This ground floor kitchen has a little courtyard that is a real sun-trap on summer afternoons and which also leads, by steps, up to the main garden behind.
There are other advantages of having a large house available during your let. Maybe you are two or even three families sharing, who get on well but need some separate space. The ground floor feels very much like an apartment within the house, while not feeling separated from it. It is self-contained, and with the small courtyard off the kitchen, even the garden is at the same level.

The house is conveniently located only five minute's walk from the town centre. A small beach at Castlepark is ten minute's drive away. There is another, much larger, beach at Garrettstown (12.5 km away). Kinsale is famous for its gourmet restaurants, traditional music in its pubs and its many historic sites. Important heritage sites include Charles Fort and the Old Court House and Museum. The coastline boasts stunning rock formations, making this a hotspot for rock enthusiasts and photographers too.

Compass Hill House is the ideal base for a large group or families from where to explore this part of county Cork. There are lots of activities for all to be entertained - from golf at the world famous Old Head Golf Club to surfing, sailing, fishing and other outdoor activities. If you have time, you can put your feet up; relax and watch the to-ing and fro-ing of the harbour.

Compass Hill House is owned by an Artist and a Geologist. Their respective interests and careers are reflected throughout the house; from the sea shells found on exotic shores around the world, to the eclectic collection of art works. We hope that you will find this house a wonderful adventure in itself.

The Cork Region

This part of the Cork coastline boasts the best drives and vistas in Ireland. West from Kinsale there are the beautiful and charming towns of Clonakilty (famous for its black pudding), Courtmacsherry, Glandore and Inchydoney (where there is a spa hotel). Skibereen, Bantry, Ballydehob and Roaringwater Bay are a day trip, but worth the effort.

Moving in-land, and you are soon in the mountains with great walks and climbs; the heights offer spectacular views over the southern Irish landscape.

East from Kinsale, Youghal to Waterford is an interesting drive along Ireland's first Geopark; the copper coast, and you could stop off at the famous Ballymaloe House and cookery school.

Kinsale Area

Kinsale really is a town for all seasons, it offers many festivals throughout the year. In addition to the Gourmet Festival in October there is the Regatta in August, a fringe Jazz festival on the October Bank holiday Weekend, a Arts week in July and a vintage car rally in May to name only a few. The full details of the calendar are available on request.

Every Tuesday there is a lively Farmer's market in Short Quay with plenty of local and exotic fare to tempt the palate.

Getting There

By Air:
-Cork Airport (20 km) is serviced by Ryanair, Aer Lingus, and British Airways

-Dublin Airport (290 km) is serviced by same operators as above in addition to other major international airlines; Continental, Etihad , Lufthansa etc.
-Shannon Airport (150 km) and Kerry Airport (105 km) are both good alternatives if your itinerary will allow.

On arrival outside Cork, follow signs for the Airport. At the top of the hill on approach to the airport there is a small roundabout; right is to the airport; straight on for Kinsale. Take the R600 from here into Kinsale; The road follows the course of the Bandon River for quite a long stretch and you'll pass through the small villages of Riverstick and Belgooly.

In Kinsale, continue to follow R600 which takes you around the harbour, passing Acton's and the Trident Hotels, turn off the R600 here taking a right towards the White Lady pub/restaurant. This is the bottom of St. John's Hill. The house is at the top, facing you. Note a bay window on the first floor.

By Train:

-Cork Railway (Kent) Station (28 km).

By Bus:

-Bus Éireann provides public transport.
Buses regularly operate from Kinsale to Cork City, with most of these going through Cork Airport on the way. Kinsale and Bandon are linked with a bus service provided by West Cork Rural Transport.

By Sea:

-The Port of Cork (16 km) operates seasonal Britanny ferry services to Roscoff (France).

-Rosslare (215 km) is served by ferries (Irish Ferries, P&O Irish, Stena) from Britain (Fishguard and Pembroke) and France (Le Havre and Cherbourg) all year.

-You could of course just sail into Kinsale and moor yourself locally!

  • Private garden

There's a 'secret garden' feel to the outside space, up some steps onto a paved patio that leads on to large grassed area. Perfect for winding down after a day's golfing, sailing or fishing. Or an ideal place for the kids to play. From the front door you can take the shortish (2.3km or 1.45miles) circular walk around Compass Hill - whether left or right depends on how you want to tackle the steep Winter's Hill! It'll definitely seem worthy of the effort when you can stop and admire the views from the upper parts of the walk.

Guest Book

Hi Marie-Louise and Marcus,

We had a lovely week in Kinsale, no rain at all, unlike today!
We all loved the house very much and were quite sad to leave, the time had gone so quickly. It was so nice to be able to walk into Kinsale then spend the evening watching the boats from the wonderful bay window. We had some nice days on the local beaches and really enjoyed a trip on 'The Spirit of Kinsale' - lovely views of the house from the boat!
The secret garden was wonderful too, so peaceful.

We would very much like to come back again next year.

Best wishes,
Roanne

Just a short note to say how much we enjoyed Compass Hill House over
the New Year. The location, its style, the layout and of course the
view were truly ideal. Despite the cold weather we managed to keep the
spot warm and thoroughly enjoyed having a fire on every day. Kinsale,
unlike the rest of the country on New Years Day, enjoyed blue skies so
we were very lucky.
Shiela (Amsterdam) New Year 2009/2010

We had a fantastic holiday- your house is really special and added to the charm of Kinsale. Call into the Tap Tavern where Mary has a pint waiting for you! We'll certainly be back.
Paul and Sara (Dublin) September 2008

What a place! Room(s) with a view, and what a view. Thanks. Sean and Les (Kildare) December 2006

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A gem of a place-sooo the "real thing!" Thank you for introducing us to the area. Great places to eat in town. We particularly liked Max's Wine Bar. Ann and Michael (Co. Antrim, N.I) June 2005

We have stayed here twice in five years. It was a perfect base for our family reunions. Such a welcoming house, we loved the way it's furnished, and the art work is great. We hope it won't be too long before we return!
