The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains Region

Pamporovo is a modern ski resort in the heart of one of the most beautiful places of the Rhodopi mountain, the mountain of the mythical singer Orpheus. It is the most southern skiing resort in Europe. it is the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. The specfic combination of natural conditions makes the resort beautiful in summer and winter alike - the large spruce forests, picturesque meadows, strange rocky forms (the Orpheus rock & others) beautiful high peaks - Snejanka (1925), Murgavetz (1858), Orleto etc. The mountain where Pamporovo is located is composed of marble that drains the water & dries the whole region. The hill has a hunchback form & is very airy so the air is always fresh. Due to the influence of the mediterrean climate the temperatures in the resort have small daily variations, the surrounding high peaks keep it from the winds. Pamporovo is situated on the 1650 m above the sea level at the foot of pea Snejanka (1926 m). it is 240 km far from Sofia & 85 km from Plovdiv.
The gentle profile of the mountain with its rounded slopes & summits makes Pamporovo particularly suitable for beginners. But there are also difficult ski runs like the Giant Slalom run which is excellent exercise for every skiing expert.

 

Pamporovo Area

Reccommended are trips to Plovdiv 83 km, or the nearby town of Smoylan which is 16 km away, Sofia is 240 km. There is a regular bus link connecting Pamporovo to these cities. The Bachkovo Monastery (2nd largest monestery in Bulgaria) is of great historical interest too. The high TV & radio transmission tower on the Snejanka Peak with a panorama cafe where the whole resort can be viewed on a clear day can be reached by chair lift. Pamporovo is the starting point for many marked tourist tracks: Smolyyanski ezera hut (2 h 15 mins or 40 mins by two lifts), Izgrev Hut (in Chernatitsa - 6 h), Momchil Yunak Hut (in Prespa - 4h 30 mins) Perelik hut (under the mountain of Golyam Perelik Peak - 4 h 30 min), the village of Progled (1 h 30 min), the city of Smoylan (3 h), The Orpheus Rock (20 min from the peak of Snejanka), the Murgavets Peak (1 h).

 

Getting There

BY PLANE FROM UK: EasyJet have low-cost flights every day out of London Gatwick and Manchester throughout the year. www.easyjet.com. It's also worth having a look at www.charterflights.co.uk/

BUS: Don't bother with the trains. They're not very reliable anyway. The bus service is very punctual. The central bus station is only 10 minutes in a taxi from the airport (It shouldn't cost you more than 10 Lev, 5 euro) and Buses to Pamporovo leave 5 times daily. 8.00am, 12.00am, 1.00pm, 4.00pm and 6.00pm. Price is 16 lev (8 euro) each way. The bus drops you in to the centre of Pamporovo.

During the winter months the following facilities are available - skiiing, snowboarding, ski-doos, quad bikes, husky dog rides and sledge hire.
During the summer months there is trekking with or without a guide, fishing, hunting, horse riding and outdoor paintballing.
Height 1620 m. Highest skiing area 1,937 m. Total length of ski runs 25 km +30 km for ski run. Longest run 4.2 km. Total number of lifts - 14, 5 chairlifts & 9 draglifts, with total capacity of 8600 persons per hour. There are ski runs of all degrees of difficulty in Pamorovo. Most of the tracks start from the very peak. Also there are 3 cross country runs in the resort with total length of 40 km.
Beginners - can start with the ski school of Pamporovo which is quite famous with quality tuition starting on the nursery slopes, after a few days they will be able to ski on the higher ski runs.
Intermediate - the total length of ski runs which are suitable for intermediate is approx 20 km. Those skiers can jump on the triple chairlift from the Malina station going to the top of Snejanka peak. Or, a single chair lift goes to the middle station from where the new four person lift runs up to the peak.
Advanced - can jump on the drag lift from the middle station which runs up the side of "The Wall". It is the most difficult ski run in the resort. The other difficult pistes start from the TV. tower after the last station of the triple chair, go right, pistes called Snejanka.
