The Algarve Region

The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. It has an area of 5,412 square kilometres with approximately 410,000 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities. The region coincides with the Faro District, and has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (Faro/Algarve Airport) [FAO] and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Fish, seafood and fruit production, which includes oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, are other important activities in the region. The Algarve is among the most popular tourist destinations in Portugal, its population more than doubles in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors. The Algarve has several cities, towns and villages. It also includes some islands and islets. The region is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 170 square kilometres and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds. The Algarve is a popular destination for tourism, primarily because of its beaches, Mediterranean climate, safety and relatively low costs.

Algarve's mild climate has attracted interest from Northern Europeans wishing to have a holiday home or residence in the region. Being a region of Portugal, and therefore in the European Union, any EU citizen has the right to freely buy property and reside with little formality in the Algarve. British expatriates, followed by German, Dutch and Scandinavians, are among the largest groups wishing to own a home in this sunny region of Portugal.

Tourism plays an important role in the economy of the Algarve. A large number of seasonal job opportunities are tourism-related and are fulfilled by thousands of immigrant workers from countries like Brazil, Ukraine and Cape Verde, among others.

In March 2007, the Minister of Economy, Manuel Pinho, announced the creation of the "Allgarve" brand, as a part of a strategical promotion of the Algarve as a tourism destination for foreign citizens.

The Algarve benefits from in excess of 300 days sunshine per annum. The summer months of June to August see average temperatures of 30 degrees celsius while temperatures rarely fall lower than 15 degrees in the winter months.

Vilamoura Area

Vilamoura is more of an area than a town in iself and has grown over the past couple of decades to more or less engulf Quarteira to the east. Located virtually in the middle of the Algarve coast, within 15Km of the main airport at Faro, Vilamoura's accessibility has helped it become one of Europe's largest beach resorts. The 20 square Km of purpose built resort are home to practically every form of sport, entertainment and amenity imaginable. Combined with wide, well laid out roads, manicured gardens and public spaces and 6 golf courses Vilamoura is without doubt a world class holiday destination.

The town is built around the upmarket, 1,200 berth Vilamoura Marina which was constructed with private money in the 1970s. Facilities are extensive and the marina caters for the whole spectrum of boats from small speedboats through to 40+ metre yachts. The harbourside is the in place for the yachting set and is home to a number of smart, chic bars, restaurants and hotels. As you would expect prices are also somewhat higher than they are a little further inland.

There are plenty of excursions and boat trips going from the Marina with coastal trips to Lagos and dolphin watching trips. There are also opportunities for big game fishing with large marlin often being hooked. The area is also a haven for watersports such as parasailing, water-skiing, scuba diving and jet skiing.

Vilamoura's golf course are the resorts other big attraction. The best known of the 6 or so golf courses are Millenium, Laguna, Pinhal, Victoria, Vila Sol and the Old Course all of which are world class.

Vilamoura is home to Portugal's biggest and perhaps best known nightclub - Kadoc. Located on the Vilamoura - Albufeira road, Kadoc regularly features big name DJs fom all over Europe and has a capacity of around 7,000 clubbers.
Other Vilamoura nightlife highlights include the bars and cafes around the Marina, in particular Portuguese football star Luis Figo's Cafe Sete (Sete being 7, Figo's number). There is also the fairly large Vilamoura casino with around 20 tables and over 500 machines.

Of course Vilamoura also has a good selection of fine sandy beaches. The most easily accessible of these is Praia da Marina (Marina beach) which has every facility imaginable and is worthy of its Blue Flag award. Located just east of the Marina, Praia da Marina stretches to Quarteira and has the backdrop of big luxury hotels one expects of a major resort.
The resort’s other beach is the huge Praia da Falésia (cliff beach) on the western side of the marina. Flesia stretches all the way to Olhos de Agua 8Km away. The name comes from the red cliffs that the beach backs onto. These cliffs form a good natural windbreak from northerly winds. Again Falésia is a Blue Flag beach so expect excellent amenities and water quality.

Despite the name translating to ‘Moorish Town’, in terms of history there is very little to see in Vilamoura, hardly surprising as it has only really existed for about 30 years. That said there is the Museu Cerra da Vila museum based on an archeological site unearthed during the construction of the marina. Mainly consisting of Roman remains including baths, a mosaic and the foundations of some villas, there are also Visigoth and Moorish traces.

Excellent location in Vilamoura

This is a spacious, new apartment with two really big double rooms and excellent facilities.

Everything you could possibly need (washing machine, iron, hair dryer, etc) is provided so you really need to bring very little with you.

You will need to hire a car as it is too far to walk to the beach. I had never driven abroad before so I was a little nervous, but it is very easy to navigate around Vilamoura and there is a lot of parking, so driving is not a problem. Car hire was cheap and the beach, Marina and shops are all a 5 min drive from the apartment.

I highly recommend this apt if you are considering a stay in Vilamoura as it is not only close to the beaches and restaurants but it is also in the middle of the golfing resorts.

We are already planning our return visit and considering it is such a short flight and the apartment is so close to Faro I think you could very happily spend a long weekend in this resort.

I recently spent 1 week in Vilamoura and stayed at Terracos do Pinhal. The apartment was excellent, plenty of room and all modern conveniences. The location was ideal, very peaceful yet only 5 minutes drive to the Marina and beach. All in all a great experience and I will certainly try to visit again before the end of the year.
