The original interior space of Number Nine was very typical of those cottages built in the 1890’s for the workers on the Pembroke estate (Ballsbridge was almost entirely orchards and nurseries at that time). The ceilings were high and the rooms well proportioned, but small. Today, there is a large extension to the rear of the cottage adding greatly to the overall space and comfort: a large airy kitchen/dining room leads through glass doors to the courtyard garden. The afternoon and evening sun lets beautiful light into the kitchen through these windows, making it an ideal place for eating and relaxing at the end of your full day.
The front room still has a high ceiling and this really adds to the sense of space. The two double bedrooms are compact without feeling too small, and the shower room is large too. In addition, there is a space upstairs from the back bedroom that is suitable as an office or for a fold-out bed if extra sleeping accommodation were needed short-term.
The central heating is augmented by a wood- or turf-burning stove in the front room that makes Number Nine a cosy retreat on colder days; and, if you are wrapping yourself up for a night in, there are books on the shelves to browse through, a television to watch and wifi wireless network. Or else you could just sit back, admire the art on the walls, and drift off with warm toes, in comfort, on the sofa.

The Dublin Region
First-time visitors to Dublin are often amazed by the low rise nature and the compactness of this capital city. Until 1998, the tallest building in Dublin was Liberty Hall at 59.6m (a record it held for 33 years) and still today there are only a handful of buildings that are taller than 40m (compare those heights with central London, where even Big Ben built in 1859 is 93m). All the main museums and tourist attractions are within the confines of the north and south circular roads; an area of about 15 square kilometres (less than five square miles!) It would take too long to compile an exhaustive list of them, but bear in mind that you may enter all of Ireland’s museums free of charge.
Traditional Irish music (best encountered in near-spontaneous sessions in local pubs) is, for most visitors, a delightful and entertaining way to spend an evening. There are lots of places in and around town that organise music; ask the barman if the pub your in has music nights, and if it doesn't he'll very likely tell you where there is.
It is sometimes easy to forget that Dublin is also a seaside town, the occasional gull seen overhead might jog the memory and pique your curiousity. The nearest beach for Number Nine is Sandymount strand, only a fifteen minute walk away. It is a broad flat beach, popular with visitors and Dubliners alike. Sunny days bring out the beach towels; windy days the sail- and kite-surfers. Sit on seafront and watch the shipping as comes and goes in Dublin Bay, or stroll along the shelly banks towards the Poolbeg light. It would seem a world away from the buzzing city just behind you.
If it's water-sports that thrill you, then you are in the right place - between Howth and Dun laoghaire there are several clubs offering lessons and access to equipment that, with some prior booking, will be happy to look after you. Sailing is big here and if you are a member of a yacht club at home, you might want to check your affiliations with Dublin clubs. Wind surfing and kite surfing are both very popular on Sandymount strand, and sea swimming is a must at the Forty-Foot. All these amenities are accessible from Number Nine using the DART.
Number Nine is very conveniently located for all of Dublin’s public transport. Several bus routes can be accessed on Pembroke and Merrion Roads just a couple of minutes walk from the front door, and the DART line is less than ten minutes. The DART is a train service that follows the coast very closely between Greystones in the south, all the way around Dublin Bay, to Malahide in the north. The DART also intersects mainline stations at Pearse and Connolly stations. Trains are frequent and relatively cheap - an adult day return from one end to the other is €8 allowing you to get on and off as you please. The Luas tram lines have termini in town and don’t yet pass this way, but from these stops you could travel to Tallaght in the west or to Sandyford in the south.
Ballsbridge Area
Ballsbridge is central to a number of Dublin’s cultural and heritage hot spots.
The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) is a very short walk from Number Nine. It plays host to many events throughout the year and is a great venue for music too, having both outdoor and indoor concerts (from Bruce Springsteen to the Irish Chamber Orchestra). The RDS is also an important sporting venue, it is home to Leinster Rugby Union throughout the season and, of course, the annual Dublin Horse Show held in August. It doesn’t end there for Ballsbridge if you're sports enthusiasts. Lansdowne Road (or as we are being encouraged to now call it: the Aviva stadium) is right next to the DART station only ten minutes walk away. Home games for Ireland (Rugby Union) and the Republic of Ireland (Association Football) are played in this remarkable piece of bold architecture.
In Ballsbridge itself, in the immediate vicinity of the bridge over the Dodder river, there are lots of amenities. There are no fewer than five Pubs, a wine bar, a coffee shop, two convenience stores, a pharmacy, and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at: choose from Indian, Thai, Cuban, Italian, and fusion cuisines. There is a branch of Ulster bank with an ATM on the corner, and a post office too.
There is a lovely park just beside the Dodder on the town side called Herbert park, where it is possible to book tennis courts, play ball games on the pitches there; a children's playground to entertain the kids; or just wander around the leafy pond walk. If even that sound too stressful, you could relax and watch a game of cricket in the Merrion Cricket Club.
There is a busy Farmers Market in Ballsbridge on a Thursday; be quick though - it is very popular with workers in the vicinity as a pleasant change form a packed lunch.
Other banks that have ATMs and branches close-by are AIB and BoI.
Almost all the embassies are located in this general area, most offering consular services if you should need them.
Getting There
Dublin airport is Ireland's busiest international airport and so is very well served by lots of airlines; it is easily accessed from this part of the city. If you intend to use a taxi, ask the driver to take you to the airport via the Dublin Port Tunnel. The tunnel has a toll, but as it is more direct, you will save the value of the toll and be at the airport in jig time, fare is about €25. Specialist coaches also use the tunnel to access the airport, the tunnel is toll-free to them, and the fare from Ballbridge is less than €10 - see Aircoach and The Patton Flyer for details.
Dublin is also well served by ferries. There are two terminals, one in Dun laoghaire, a short journey northbound on the DART - 7 stops to Lansdowne Road; the other is in Dublin Port, buses there go to Bus Aras (the main bus station) and await the arrival of the ferry and the journey time is 15 mins. From there take the DART southbound at Connolly station - 5 stops to Lansdowne Road
