The Cavan Region

Cavan town (a major regional town) is a 15 minute drive from lodge and Enniskillen is a 30 minute drive. The town lies in the northwest of the island, along the border with Northern Ireland. The town is located on the main road - the N3 road - linking Dublin (to the south) with Enniskillen, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town (to the north).

The O'Reilly family established a castle in the town in the late 13th century. A Franciscan monastery was also established at around the same time. In the 15th century the local ruler, Bearded Owen O'Reilly set up a market which attracted merchants from Dublin and Drogheda. King James I of England granted the town a charter in 1610. In the early 19th century, the Maxwells, Lords Farnham of Cromwellian origin, built a new wide street that still bears the name Farnham Street. This was lined with comfortable town houses, public buildings (such as the courthouse which dates from 1825, and churches. In the late 19th century, Cavan became an important rail junction between the midland and western lines and those of the Northern Railways. The Town Hall was built in 1909. In 1938, work began on the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim. Five kilometres west of Cavan Town is the Church of Ireland Kilmore Cathedral, which contains a Romanesque doorway dating from the 12th century.

There is an abundance of places of interest all within easy distance including the world famous Marble Arch caves, Florence Court, Crom Castle etc.

 

Belturbet Area

Historic Belturbet town is an easy 4 minute drive from the lodge (2km). Belturbet’s location is at one of the best places for crossing the River Erne. When the Anglo-Normans tried to conquer Cavan in the early 13th century, Walter de Lacy built a small fort on Turbot Island. The fort was probably made of wood and it hasn't survived, though the steep mound of earth where it was built is still to be seen. In the 17th century Belturbet was developed by Stephen Butler, a planter from England. It became an important trading centre, and it also had an English garrison. Many of the original fortifications are in good repair. The town retains much of its original lay-out. The main street leads to the square or 'diamond' where all of the town's important buildings are situated. The parish church dominates the sky-line; some of it dates from the early 17th century, and it was one of the first Anglican churches built in Ireland. James Somers won the Victoria Cross during World War One. He is buried at the local Church of Ireland.


The town itself offers a range of shops, restaurants and traditional pubs with regular nightly entertainment. The Belturbet Festival of the Erne comprising of a range of fun activities and events including live music, pub quizzes, piglet racing, boating competitions and one of the largest fancy dress parties in Ireland, is held at the end of July every year. For golf enthusiasts there is a choice of courses at either nearby Belturbet Golf Club or the Championship course at the prestigious Slieve Russell Hotel (8km from lodge) on the Ballyconnell road. For those keen on fishing, apart from enjoying this activity from the Cornadarragh jetty, there are many further opportunities along the extensive Shannon/Erne waterway. Boating on the waterway can be enjoyed from the Emerald Star line which is located at Belturbet marina. There are also many walking/cycling trails throughout Cavan and Fermanagh and the opportunity to take part in horse-riding at the Cavan Equestrian Centre.

 

Getting There

Travelling from Dublin, follow signs for M3 which bypasses Dunshaughlin, Navan and Kells. On exiting M3 follow main Cavan road through Virginia as far as the roundabout outside Cavan town. Take the 3rd exit from this roundabout following Belturbet sign. On reaching Belturbet travel right through the town until reaching the roundabout on the other side of the town. Take the first turn off roundabout following Ballyconnell direction. Then, after approximately 600 metres, take the slip road to the left. Proceed another 600 metres (approx.) and take the first left following signs for Erne River/Cornadarragh Forest Park.

On reaching barrier, use access code to gain entry. Proceed straight ahead down the hill and turn right at end of hill. No. 10 is the first house on the left overlooking river.
