The Wexford Region
Boasting over 115kms of unparalleled golden coastline, Wexford entices all travelers in search of a sufficient dose of sunny southeast weather. Easily accessible from virtually anywhere in the country, Wexford is conducive to all types of travel itineraries. Only a two hour drive from Dublin, Wexford imbibes a lively, cosmopolitan mix of old world Irish charm with modern Irish innovation. Immersed within this unique bed of Irish culture is St Helens Village, a pleasant and popular seaside resort featuring a most attractive Blue Flag beach, complete with a plethora of sporting facilities. Johnstown House and Gardens are within 20kms drive of the property, a must see for pleasant garden walks and picnic's. To the west of Wexford town, travelers can visit Wexford’s acclaimed visitor attraction, the Irish National Heritage Park, showcasing Ireland’s rich historical background beginning with man’s settlement in Ireland in 7000 B.C. to the arrival of the Normans in the 12th Century. With mementos, re-enactments, and artifacts, visitors are given a unique taste of Ireland as it was 9000 years ago. And while absorbing the historical tradition is most important to appreciating the town of Wexford, travelers must also venture to the popular local eateries and craft shops to experience the fresh cuisine and artisan tradition. With a vast array of maritime sports like fishing and sea angling, visitors will never grow restless. A short drive towards New Ross will bring you to the acclaimed JFK Arboretum and Park It is dedicated to the memory of President John F Kennedy, whose family originally came from nearby Dunganstown and who visited her in 1963 shortly before he was assassinated in Dallas Texas. The Arboretum contains 4,500 types of trees and shrubs from all temperate regions of the world, planted in botanical sequence. The park is perfect for picnics and has horse and carraige rides around the park during the summer months.
For the budding cyclist there are some fantastic cycle routes you can take, here are some examples:
- Route 1: Slaney Route (53 km. Approx 3½ hours)
This is a trip around North Wexford taking you across the bridge and on towards Enniscorthy. The road to Castlebridge can be quite busy with traffic but after this the route takes on its true character; quiet scenic back roads which go up and down the numerous small hills that pepper the landscape. Enniscorthy is especially hilly and the decisive battle of the 1798 rebellion was fought on top of nearby Vinegar Hill. Later you will pass by Norman fortifications on a hill at Magh Mayne. Cross the bridge at Ferrycarrig and turn left onto a smaller road here for a straight run back into the town.
- Route 2: Coastal Route (36 km Approx 2½ hours)
This is the easiest route, which will take you out to the internationally important Wildfowl Reserve of the Wexford Slobs and then on past some fantastic beaches. Be cautious at first on the busy road to Castlebridge until the right turn which takes you down a pleasant lane to ‘The Slobs’. The Discovery Centre and the numerous observation hides along the road are open to the public free of charge. Further on, refreshments may be had in the village of Blackwater. They will be needed because there is a series of short but steep hills in this vicinity. Continue on to where Route2 rejoins Route 1 at Cooney’s Crossroads and from here it is mostly downhill back into Wexford.
- Route 3: South Wexford Route (78 km; Approx 5 hours)
This is a tour of South Wexford which initially takes you uphill towards a roundabout near the picturesque Johnstown Castle, and then on to the old town of Rosslare and its busy Ferryport nearby at Kilrane. There are several beaches signposted off the quiet roads between Kilrane and Ladies Island. The route to the fishing village of Kilmore Quay is fast , flat and characterised by sudden changes in direction but watch out for Irelands only surviving windmill at Tacumshane. Later you can afford to linger at Johnstown Castle with its gardens and Agricultural Museum, knowing that a few minutes freewheeling will take you back down to Wexford town.
And for those fortunate enough to be in Rosslare during the summer months, be sure to check out the ‘Rosslare Harbor Festival’ dates for 2011 to be confirmed!
The Wexford Festival Opera is always a popular event, the festival dates this year are 16th - 30th October 2011
Rosslare Harbour Area
Kilrane is a small village which acts as the gateway to St Helens Village. It boasts two pubs which are very friendly and offer dining facilities too. There is also a small convenience store to purchase your essentials. For those who may have an interest in equestrian, there are a number of stables close by to the propery "Loisin Riding Stables". The surrounding area has the most beautiful walks either via the coast, walking to Carne will take about 1 hour and 2 hours to Carnsore Point, two beautiful walks that will help you build up an appetite for the local cuisine. Alternatively you may wish to cycle around the lanes and boreens.
Further down the road towards Rosslare Harbour there is a small shopping centre with Supervalue as the flag store, the development has a post office, chemist, coffee shop and hair dressers.
