The Brittany Region

Brittany has a mild maritime climate, winters are not harsh and summer temperatures do not become stifling in the height of summer. Average temperatures in summer reach an extremely pleasant 30 degrees Centigrade.
The history of Brittany is as old as the history of Europe.
Early little know tribes left impressive marks all over Brittany in the form of Dolmens ('stone table' in Breton) and Menhirs ('long stones'). One of the most impressive landmarks in the country can be found at Carnac in Southern Brittany: an alignment of hundreds of Menhirs.
56 BC: the area is conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar. Called Armorica, it becomes part of Gallia Lugdunenesis.
V- VII centuries: squeezed to the English borders (mainly Cornwall and Wales) by the invading Angles and Saxons, a lot of Bretons leave Britain to settle in what was still known as Armorica. With their number growing, they rename the area Brittany (Britain became known as Great Britain to differentiate the 2).
845: following his victory over the French army at the battle of Ballon in eastern Brittany, Nominoe founds the first Kingdom of Brittany.
851: defeated once again at the battle of Jengland by Erispoe and his troops, Charles the Bald of France recognise the Breton independence.
The Middle Ages are a troubled part of the Breton history when French and English kings fight over their sphere of influence over Brittany.
1464: publication of the Catholicon, a Breton-Latin-French dictionary by Jehan Lagadeuc. It was the world first trilingual, first Breton and first French dictionary.
1488: a sad date in the history of Brittany. Defeated by a French army supported by mercenaries from Italy and Switzerland, Duke Francis II of Brittany has to sign a treaty effectively giving over the country to the French.
1532: the Duchy of Brittany is officially incorporated into the Kingdom of France through the Treaty of Union between Brittany and France. Nevertheless the Duchy manages to preserve a certain fiscal and legislative autonomy proteceted by the 'States of Brittany' a sort of parliament.
XVII century: with French naval expansionism, Colbert creates or renovate the ports of Saint Malo, Brest and Lorient.
During the 18th century and with growing trade with the West Indies (slave trade in particular) Nantes becomes a major commercial trading place.
1789: to the sounds of 'liberté, egalité, fraternité', Brittany loses all the privileges she had managed to preserve after the union treaty of 1532. This led to growing opposition to the Revolution and various uprisings. Brittany was divided into 5 'départements'.
The second world world saw the Germans invading Brittany and taking over key naval installations like Brest, Lorient and Saint Nazaire. During Allied operations to liberate Europe, those 3 ports were carpet bombed and almost completely destroyed.

Guest Book

"Teag Beag" is a luxuriously appointed self-catering holiday cottage/gite in a rural location, just 7km from Josselin, Brittany France. It is a 4 bedroom house and is ideal for a holiday for 1 large family or 2 families holidaying together. It can comfortably sleep 5 to 10 people and the house is more than generous in its bedrooms and living areas, yet the house still retains its cosy and comfortable feel. It is only 12km from Ploermel and the beach and watersport activities at Lac au Duc and is within a good striking distance of Carnac , with its glorious beaches and magnificient archaelogic pre-historic site.
