The Midi-Pyrenees Region
The largest region in France (larger than the Netherlands or Denmark) and the most diverse. It stretches from the Pyrenees mountains in the south west to the Central Massif in the East. Every department offers a change of landscape. While Toulouse (captial city of the region) is densely populated, the rest of the region has one of the lowest densities in western europe. A mainly agricultural economy ensure you will enjoy unspoilt countryside. Occitan & Gascon were the traditional languages but French is now dominant in the region.
It's climate is unique, influenced by the atlantic coast further west and the warmer climate of the Mediteranean further south. It enjoys 4 distinct seasons. Spring kicks in in March with warm days with lots of sunshine where the forests burst into life and is perfect for walking and mountain biking. Summer is very warm with temperatures climbing into the high 30's. Autumn is very nice with very warm days and is a wonderful time for hiking through the forests. Winter brings sunshine and snow, offering a refreshing change in scenery and cross country or nordic skiing in the 'Monts des Lacaune'.
There are many beautiful places to visit;
Albi, UNESCO world heritage site and its beautiful cathedral, Lautrec museum and cobbled streets
Carcassonne, UNESCO world heritage site, the largest inhabited fortified castle in Europe
Gaillac and it's hillside vineyards which are among the oldest in the world
Castres and it's Goya museum and picturesque merchants houses overhanging the Agout river, and lovely streets
Mazamet and its fabulous market place, Lautrec, Roquefort, the Millau bridge, the gorge du Banquet
The Black Mountains - beautiful views over its valleys and gorges and medieval villages. The Sidobre national park and it's amazing granite rock formations.
Cambounes Area
The Lavender cottage offers self-catering accommodation in the beautiful department of Tarn. The cottage overlooks the quaint village of Cambounes, situated in the Parc Naturel Regional Du Haut-Languedoc, between the Monts de Lacaune and the Montagne Noire, in one of the most scenic regions of the south-west of France. The area is well known for hiking and mountain biking and the local town of Brassac hosted the French championship in mountain biking descents in May 2011. Walking and mountain biking trails criss-cross every corner of the area and the famous GR36 passes right by the cottage. The well known pilgrimage trail ‘Chemin de St. Jacques de Compostelle’ (GR653) portrayed in the recent Hollywood film ‘The Way’ joins the GR36 in the communal forest of Cambounes. The area has several fresh water lakes with full amenities such as beach, life guards, restaurant, snack bar & water sports, making them ideal for families. The beautiful towns of Catres & Mazamet are only 20 mins drive. Both offer fresh markets, good shopping and great dining opportunities. The UNESCO world heritage sites of Carcassonne & Albi are 1 hour away. The capital of the region ‘La ville rose’ Toulouse is an hour and half to the west. The Mediterranean cities of Narbonne and Beziers are just an hour and half drive. The region has a proud rugby tradition and is host to several top league clubs such as Castres Olympique, Stade Toulousain, Albi and Montpellier. There are plenty of other interesting places to visit such as the Sidobre national park (and it’s amazing granite rock formations), the Millau bridge, Roquefort, Lautrec, Gaillac, too many to mention here. Come and experience real French living in this unspoilt region.
