The Sligo Region
The county of Sligo is also known as Yeats County. The famous poet William Butler Yeats is buried at the Drumcliffe Churchyard, under the loaf-shaped Benbulben Mountain. The place is also considered to be the main source of inspiration by the poet, because it has beautiful sceneries and long coastlines.
Located in the west coast province of Connacht, Sligo actually translates to “the place of shells,” as the prehistoric people of the town is known for their huge appetite for the crustacean shellfish. Archaeologists and historians found the remains of shellfish buried all over Sligo. It is the largest town in the northwest of Ireland, and its history can be traced back to as far as 6,000 years ago.
Sligo is popular for its rich Irish history, heritage, folklore, and mythology. Almost every stone and hill in the county has its own and unique story to tell.
The magnificent mountains, winding rivers, and uneven coastline make Sligo popular among tourists and backpackers. As a striking contrast to the rugged uplands and terrains of the county, the lakes around Sligo are well-known for their very still waters and marshlands. The summit of Knocknarae is known for its imposing Neolithic cairn and is also identified by the locals as Queen Maeve’s grave. In neighboring Carrowmore, visitors will find the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland.
The county’s scenic coast has some excellent surfing beaches like Strandhill, Rosses Point, and Enniscrone. The Lissadell House is a good family attraction with a very beautiful beach nearby. It is once the home of Countess Markievicz. Golf courses are also found in the county. Other activities for tourists include horse riding, cycling, fishing, and other water sports.
When you are in Sligo, you can find refuge in its self-catering accommodation options, and bed and breakfasts.
Riverstown Area
A lovely village with Sligo Folk Park in the centre of it - a great haven for tourists, once a year the Folk Park hosts The Annual Vintage Day which is proving to becoming more successful each year!
Carrowkeel:
Carrowkeel is a beautifully situated megalithic hill top passage tomb cemetery, Consisting of 14 passage cairns identified with letters, most of the cairns are round in shape except cairn E, which is a long oval shape and consists of a Court tomb forecourt and cruciform passage grave. If you climb up from the top car-park the first tomb you will see is Cairn G shown above, this is a classic Irish passage tomb, consisting of a short passage leading to a central chamber with three equally spaced side chambers. But the most interesting feature of this tomb is the roofbox situated above the entrance the only other known roofbox is the one at Newgrange, but unlike Newgrange this one is aligned to the midsummer sunset.
Situated: About 10 miles north of Boyle on the N4, is the village of Castlebaldwin, from there head west into the Bricklieve mountains, following the signs for Carrowkeel Passage Tombs. Turn left at the sign for the donkey sanctuary, and then first right, park here. A 30 minute walk brings you to the cemetery.
Fishing:
Whether you are a professional fisherman who wants to fly fish on Lough Arrow or salmon fish in Ballisodare Bay or just an amateur who wants to teach your kids how to fish for the first time Ardagh House is ideally located with over a mile of the river Unshin running through the farm.
Lough Arrow and Lough Bo are only three miles away both are renowned trout lakes with Lough Bo stocked annually by the Fisheries. We also organise boat hire on both lakes for more information on this go to activities on our website and then boat hire or email us at info@ardaghsuites.com
Some fishing tackle available on site
Clay Pigeon Shooting:
At Riverstown sporting clay pigeon shooting all equipment is supplied, an instructor is always present and they can cater for both individuals and groups. In addition to clay pigeon shooting there is a rifle range.
They are well set up, with an all weather shooting range and floodlights so that inclement weather is unlikely to spoil a planned day.
An interesting option they offer is the use of low impact shells, which have the effect of decreasing gun recoil, something that is particularly appreciated by beginners and smaller individuals.
