On site are an all weather putting green by Tour Greens Europe, gymnasium/saunas / steam rooms which are available as optional extras. A market town on the east bank of the River Erne, midway between the waters of Lough Oughter and Upper Lough Erne, Belturbet is an ideal coarse fishing centre. A two-hour river cruise is available during summer months. Seven miles (11 km) west of Belturbet near the Fermanagh border is a well-known coarse fishing centre, Ballyconnell. According to tradition, it is named after Conal Cearnach, a first-century hero of the Red Branch Knights, who was killed here by the men of Connacht in revenge for the slaying of their king. Above the village rises Slieve Russell (1331 feet), providing extensive views.
Belturbet lies at one of the best places for crossing the River Erne. When the Anglo-Normans tried to conquer Cavan in the early thirteenth century, they built a small fort on Turbot Island. This is near the present-day bridge at Belturbet and in recent years a small park has been developed on the island. The fort was probably made of wood and it hasn’t survived, though the steep mound of earth where it was built is still to be seen. In the 17th century Belturbet was developed by Stephen Butler, a planter from England. It was an important trading centre, and it also had a garrison. Much of the original fortifications are in good repair. The town retains much of its original lay-out, with the main street leading to the square or ‘diamond’ with all of the town’s important buildings. The parish church dominates the sky-line; some of it dates from the early 17th century, and it was one of the first Anglican churches built in Ireland.
